    摘要: A lead weight or other mass is crimped to the contact button assembly of the arcing rod of a high-voltage alternating-current power fuse thereby increasing the mass of the arcing rod without increasing the diameter of the rod. The increased mass of the arcing rod decreases the velocity with which the arcing rod moves upon fusing of the fusible member thereby decreasing the rate of elongation of the arc drawn between the end of the arcing rod and the stationary ferrule at the other end of the fuse. Under high current conditions, the shorter arc length drawn in the fuse reduces the pressure of the arc-extinguishing gas generated by the arc, thereby reducing the risk that an economically constructed fuse will burst in those situations when the arc is not interrupted at the first current zero. This result is accomplished without adversely affecting operation of the fuse and interruption of the arc at low current levels.

    摘要: A pull-ring for an electrical device, such as a high-voltage fuse, which may be placed in a mounting. The pull-ring operates a latch, which is capable of holding the fuse closed in the mounting, only when it is reciprocated. The pull-ring is pivotable independently of its reciprocation without affecting the condition of the latch. Accordingly, when a trunnion on the device is in a hinge of the mounting and a pushing force is applied to the pull-ring with a tool to close the device, the natural decrease in the interior angle between the tool and the device can rotate the pull-ring without preventing the latch from holding the device closed. Further, whether the pushing force or a pulling (opening) force is applied to the pull-ring, the direction of application of the force may be adjusted or may naturally change before, during,or after such force application with affecting the ability of the latch to hold the device closed. The tool may, therefore, be either a non-grasping tool (a "hot stick") or one (a "shotgun stick") capable of grasping the pull-ring. In the latter event, when the tool grasps the pull-ring and the trunnion is out of the hinge, the pull-ring is biased to a pivotal orientation whereat the trunnion is presented for convenient insertion into the hinge upon manipulation of the tool.

    摘要: A high voltage dropout type expulsion fuse has a lower trunnion assembly mounted on one end and a fuse release assembly mounted on the other end thereof. To assure the proper positional relationship between the trunnion assembly and the fuse release assembly, the fuse housing has a locating boss at one end adapted to engage and position the trunnion assembly and a positioning slot formed in the other end adapted to engage and position the fuse release assembly. The locating slot and boss must be properly positioned with respect to one another to assure the proper positional relationship of the trunnion assembly and the fuse release assembly. The lower locating boss is integrally formed on the wall of a metallic ferrule by extruding a portion of the wall into the cavity of a die to form an integral locating boss. This integral boss cannot cause the leakage of moisture into the interior of the fuse. The boss is formed by first determining the desired location of the boss by measuring the correct positional relationship with respect to the locating slot, positioning a die having a cavity at a position where the boss is to be located at the exterior of the ferrule wall, and extruding a portion of the wall of the ferrule into the cavity to form the locating boss. Also, various non-circular shapes of bosses can be conveniently formed in this manner by merely changing the shape of the die and punch. This is advantageous if it is desired to prevent non-compatible end fittings, e.g. trunnion assemblies, from being used.

    摘要: An end fitting for a high-voltage fuse is disclosed. A conductive end ferrule of the fuse has an enlargement formed near one end thereof, the enlargement having a shoulder remote from the fuse end which defines an exhaust port. The end fitting has a pair of arms with slots for selectively engaging or disengaging a fuse mounting and an externally threaded collar between the arms. The collar has an aperture with a shoulder on the wall thereof which engages the shoulder on the fuse so that the fuse end protrudes from the collar. The collar mates with an exhaust control device having a threaded bore therethrough. The bore contains a lip designed to engage the fuse end. When the fuse is inserted through the aperture in the collar so that the shoulders engage each other, the exhaust control device may be screwed onto the collar to trap the enlargement shoulder and the fuse end between the collar shoulder and the lip thereby mounting the arms to the fuse and closing the exhaust port with the exhaust control device.

    摘要: A circuit-interrupting device for electrical power distribution and transmission systems is provided having improved handling provisions for removal and installation with respect to conventional mountings. The handling provisions permit the circuit-interrupting device to pivot about the lower hinge of the mounting before the circuit-interrupting device is lifted out of the mounting via a handling tool. This permits the dimensions of the circuit-interrupting device to be greater than conventional circuit-interrupting devices. For example, in a preferred embodiment, the circuit-interrupting device includes exhaust diverter structure which directs exhaust away from the mounting, the exhaust diverter structure extending beyond the maximum dimensions which allow the circuit-interrupting device to be directly lifted out of the mounting hinge, i.e. the exhaust diverter structure interferes with the mounting if the circuit-interrupting device is lifted in a direction out of the mounting. The handling provisions include a handling loop on the circuit-interrupting device that is spaced away from the trunnion of the circuit-interrupting device which is received by the lower hinge of the mounting. The location of the handling loop is selected so as to provide suitable pivoting of the circuit-interrupting device before lifting out of the mounting hinge.

    摘要: A low-exhaust composite drop-out assembly is provided that is utilizable in a standard cutout mounting in electrical power distribution systems. The composite drop-out assembly includes current-limiting and low-current clearing sections and is easily removable from mounting for servicing. The sections are efficiently arranged in a side by side configuration.. The low-current clearing section includes a fuse-robe assembly having a replaceable fuse cartridge. Accordingly, the low-current clearing section is simply and economically renewable for reuse whether or not the current-limiting section has operated. Further, the current-limiting section need not be replaced if only the low-current clearing section operated in response to overcurrent in a low range. Additionally, the sections are separable so that the low-current clearing section can be reused after simple refusing even when the current-limiting section has operated.
