    Abstract: A fastener for coupling two relatively thin members having oversized openings therein such as road guard rails which are subject to severe shear loads. The fastener includes a stud having an enlarged head portion and a body portion extending therefrom. The body portion is adapted to pass through the oversized openings and the head is adapted to engage with the surface of the adjacent thin member and is larger than the opening therein. A receptacle is provided which is adapted to interengage and disengage with the stud body between a fastened and unfastened position. At least one spiral cam slot is on the stud body and a corresponding cam surfaces on the receptacle whereby relative rotation between the stud body and receptacle will cause the cam surface to follow the cam slot between the locked and unlocked positions. A spring is positioned to be biased as the cam surface follows the spiral cam slots thereby assisting in drawing the two members into tight interengagement and retaining the stud and receptacle in fastened condition. Finally, a retainer is provided for maintaining proper orientation of the fastener when the members are subjected to a shear load so that the primary load on the fastener is a shear load thereby increasing the load therein capacity of the fastener.

    Abstract: A front insert receptacle for use in fastening two members together. The receptacle including housing opened at one end to removeably receive a stud therein. A stop surface is on the housing to engage with the upper surface of one member when the receptacle is partially extended through an opening therein. Structure is on the housing to form a rotational stop to prevent the housing from rotating with respect to the one member when it is extended therein. At least one cam slot is on the housing and a corresponding cam follower is captured by the cam slot and is initially in a first position when the housing is inserted in the one member. Biasing structure is on the housing in engagement with the cam follower and responsive to engagement of the cam follower and rotation thereof along the cam slots until in alignment with a portion of the slot which permits the biasing means to direct a portion of the cam follower into engagement with the under surface of the one member to retain the receptacle in position on the one member. Finally, a stud lock is on the housing adapted to engage with a stud after a housing has been mounted on the one member and the stud has been mounted in the other member and inserted into the housing. Thereafter, relative rotation of the stud with respect to the housing in one direction will compress the biasing means, activate the stud locking means, and draw the two members into fixed interengagement and relative rotation of the stud with respect to the housing in a second direction will deactivate the stud lock and permit the stud to be removed from the housing and the two members to be separated.

    Abstract: A high-frequency spindle has a tube shaft extending along and rotatable about an axis, a chuck carried on a front end of the shaft, adapted to fit with a tool or tool holder, and a ball cage in the shaft and having a radially extending window. A locking ball os radially displaceable in the window between a holding position engaging in a seat of the tool and a freeing position clear of the seat. An angled surface is engageable radially with the ball, and an actuating rod is axially shiftable and coupled to the cage or to the angled surface. An actuator can axially shift the rod and thereby relatively axially displace the ball and the angled surface and cam the ball with the angled surface into the holding position. A primary spring biases the rod so as shift the ball with the angled surface into the holding position.
