Abstract: An engine system that delivers torque to a driveline of a vehicle includes an internal combustion engine (ICE), a manifold, an engine phaser (ePhaser), an electric turbine (eTurbine) and a controller. The ICE includes intake valves and exhaust valves. The ePhaser is configured to adjust timing of the intake and exhaust valves. The eTurbine is driven by an electric motor and is configured to deliver air toward and away from the manifold. The controller determines an ICE start request and, sends a signal to the ePhaser to open identified valves of the intake valves and the exhaust valves creating a pathway through the ICE. The controller further sends a signal to the electric motor to rotate the eTurbine in a direction that moves air out of the manifold. The eTurbine is used to deplete air in the manifold before starting the ICE and reduce emissions at startup.

Abstract: A method of operating exhaust gas recirculation pump for an internal combustion engine including: providing an EGR pump assembly including an electric motor coupled to a roots device having rotors, the EGR pump operably connected to an internal combustion engine; providing an EGR control unit linked to the EGR pump assembly; providing sensors linked to the EGR control unit; determining if a motor speed is within a predetermined target in step S1 wherein when motor speed=predetermined target then; determining if a motor torque is within a predetermined target in step S2 wherein when motor torque=predetermined target then; determining if a motor temperature is within a predetermined target in step S3 wherein when motor temperature=predetermined target then; and maintaining operation of the exhaust gas recirculation pump.

The method may comprise, using a discrete camshaft operation for different pairs of the combustion cylinders to run the at least two sets of cylinders in the LTC mode, and when a load operation point of the engine increases, transitioning a first set of cylinders, of the at least two sets of cylinders, to run in a SI mode, and, after the first set of cylinders is transitioned to run in the SI mode, transitioning the second set of cylinders to run in the GCI mode, and, after the second set of cylinders is transitioned to run in the GCI mode, transitioning the first set of cylinders to run in the GCI mode.

Abstract: The present invention describes a fuel-management system for minimizing particulate emissions in turbocharged direct injection gasoline engines. The system optimizes the use of port fuel injection (PFI) in combination with direct injection (DI), particularly in cold start and other transient conditions. In the present invention, the use of these control systems together with other control systems for increasing the effectiveness of port fuel injector use and for reducing particulate emissions from turbocharged direct injection engines is described. Particular attention is given to reducing particulate emissions that occur during cold start and transient conditions since a substantial fraction of the particulate emissions during a drive cycle occur at these times. Further optimization of the fuel management system for these conditions is important for reducing drive cycle emissions.

Abstract: A method for using biodiesel fuel in compression ignition internal combustion engines is described, the biodiesel fuel being present in a light oil diesel-biodiesel blend with a percentage of biodiesel greater than 7%, in which this percentage of biodiesel higher than 7% causes an increase in the viscosity of the mixture, the increase in viscosity negatively affecting the cold start of the engine; the method reduces the biodiesel concentration to below 7% in the starting phase of the engine, the reduction in concentration being achieved by adding light oil diesel to the light oil diesel-biodiesel blend.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for mitigating spark plug wet-fouling in an engine system. In one example, a method may include, after spark plug wet-fouling has been detected prior to an engine start, selecting between drying one or more of the wet-fouled spark plugs by routing a heated gas through one or more engine cylinders and by routing a compressed gas through the one or more engine cylinders. In this way, on-demand airflow may be provided to expedite spark plug drying.
