Abstract:
A method and data processing system for providing a preload imaging process that is self-healing. The state information of a single or multi-threaded preload environment is autonomically recognized and stored in a log file along with the corresponding file images that are being preloaded. The log tracks the image files and related state information for a plurality of simultaneously executing (preloading) threads. When a crash occurs during the preload process, the log information is dynamically analyzed to determine a safe point within the respective threads to resume the preload operation. The preload process is then autonomically resumed from the safe location without necessarily having to restart the entire process.
Abstract:
Traffic signal data is broadcast, for receipt by vehicles traversing the roadways controlled by the traffic signals. If desired, traffic lights are provided with the capability to broadcast their location, status, changing cycles and timing data continuously. A receiving system in a vehicle is configured to receive the traffic signal data and display, to a user of the vehicle, visual display information and/or audible information informing the user of a speed range which, if followed, optimizes the use of the highway and minimizes the number of starts and stops that must be made.
Abstract:
A method and system for obtaining a check digit to identify a given numeric sequence of n digits and to verify the accuracy of subsequent entries of the numeric sequence. First, a numeric sequence of n digits is distributed among elements of at least two matrices. Next, the matrices are multiplied together, thereby obtaining a resultant matrix having m elements. Finally, a check digit is derived from the m elements of the resultant matrix, which may be utilized to identify the numeric sequence and verify the accuracy of subsequent entries of the numeric sequence.
Abstract:
A hypervisor intercepts a reduced power mode call from a guest operating system (GOS) and executes reduced power scripts, prior to passing control back to BIOS for entry into the reduced power mode.
Abstract:
The invention partitions the HDD into three areas, namely, no access, write-only, and the conventional read/write. Sensitive data (antivirus programs, back up data, etc.) is written into write-only areas, which thereafter become designated “no access” by appropriately changing their designation a data structure known as “logical block address” or “LBA”. Only users having approved passwords can change the status of a “no access” block back to “write-only” or “read/write”.
Abstract:
A system and method for autonomically configuring a router are presented. An agent is installed on a client that tracks resource authorizations for particular applications. The agent sends a configuration request to a router that requests the router to change one or more router parameters, such as assigning a port to the client. The router compares the configuration request against its router policies, and changes router parameters (assigns resources) based upon the configuration request. Once the agent and the router authorize the resources, the application uses the resources to communicate with a computer network through the client resource and the router resource. When the application is terminated, the router and the client disable their respective resources.
Abstract:
A call from a user operating system (UOS) to BIOS to configure a connected device into a reduced energy consumption mode is routed through a virtual machine monitor (VMM). The VMM determines whether a service O.S. (SOS) is in need of the device and if so the VMM informs the UOS that the device has been configured as ordered, while allowing the SOS to complete its task with the device. If the SOS is not in need of the device, or at the completion of the SOS task with the device, the VMM passes the call to ACPI/BIOS to configure the device in the demanded energy consumption mode.

Abstract:
An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for identifying structural stress conditions for computer hardware. The apparatus includes a plurality of modules configured to functionally execute the necessary steps of monitoring a physical condition affecting a computer hardware component, recognizing a potential damage condition based on a threshold, and responding to the potential damage condition. These modules in the described embodiments include a monitoring module, a recognition module, and a response module. Beneficially, such an apparatus, system, and method would identify potential damage conditions and alert a user to the potential damage condition before physical damage to the computer hardware component occurs. The user can then alleviate the physical condition affecting the computer component and avoid component damage.
Abstract:
A system, method, and program product is provided that has a virtualized environment provided by a hypervisor. In the virtualized environment, one or more guest operating systems operate simultaneously with a privileged operating system. One of the guest operating systems identifies a device software update, such as a device driver or firmware update, corresponding to a hardware device that is attached to the computer system. The hypervisor is used to notify the privileged operating system of the device software update. When the privileged operating system is notified of the update, the privileged operating system uses one or more techniques to deny the guest operating systems access to the device. The privileged operating system then updates the device software update. After the device software update has been applied, the privileged operating system resumes access between the guest operating systems and the hardware device.
