    Abstract: An electronic device may have a display with a cover layer. An ambient light sensor may be aligned with an ambient light sensor window formed from an opening in a masking layer on the cover layer in an inactive portion of the display. To help mask the ambient light sensor window from view, the ambient light sensor window may be provided with a black coating that matches the appearance of surrounding masking layer material while allowing light to reach the ambient light sensor. The black coating may be formed from a black physical vapor deposition thin-film inorganic layer with a high index of refraction. An antireflection layer formed from a stack of dielectric layers may be interposed between the black thin-film inorganic layer and the display cover layer.

    Abstract: An electronic device may include electrical components and other components mounted within an interior of a housing. The device may have a display on a front face of the device and may have a glass layer that forms part of the housing on a rear face of the device. The glass layer may be provided with regions having different appearances. The regions may be textured, may have coatings such as thin-film interference filter coatings formed from stacks of dielectric material having alternating indices of refraction, may have metal coating layers, and/or may have ink coating layers. Textured surfaces may be formed on thin glass layers and polymer films that are coupled to the glass layer. A glass layer may be formed from a pair of coupled glass layers. The coupled layers may have one or more recesses or other structures to visually distinguish different regions of the glass layer.

    Abstract: An electronic device may have transparent structures. The transparent structures may include a transparent member such as a transparent button member. The transparent member may have an inner surface that is covered with an opaque masking layer. The opaque masking layer may be white and may include a white porous inorganic layer covered with an opaque layer that increases the optical density of the opaque masking layer. The white porous inorganic layer may be formed by depositing a metal or other material using physical vapor deposition followed by an annealing process in the presence of oxygen. The opaque layer may be an optically dense inorganic layer such as a metal oxide layer. The button member may be located within an opening in a display cover layer. A fingerprint sensor may be attached to the opaque layer on the button member.

    Abstract: An electronic device may have a housing in which electrical components such as a display and other components are mounted. Adjustable decoration may be formed on the electronic device. The adjustable decoration may serve as trim for the housing or a component mounted on the housing, may include a logo, or may be used to form other visual elements. The adjustable decoration may have an appearance that is electrically adjustable by control circuitry in the electronic device. The control circuitry may measure sensor data using sensors, may gather user input from input-output devices, and may gather other information with input-output devices to detect events. When an event is detected such as an incoming communication, a calendar reminder, user input, activation of an electrical component such as a camera, or other event, the control circuitry can adjust the appearance of the adjustable decoration.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with optical markers. A marker may be formed from a coating. The coating may be patterned to form a two-dimensional optical code or may be patterned to form an outline or other recognizable marker structure that helps provide information about an electronic device. A device with a sensor such as a depth sensor or other sensor may gather information on the electronic device and its markers. This information may include information on images captured with an image sensor while the electronic device is illuminated by one or more light beams from the depth sensor or other light sources. Markers may be configured to serve as mixed reality optical markers in a mixed reality system. Analysis of the mixed reality marker images or other sensor data may reveal information on device type, device location, device size, device orientation, and other information on a marked device.

    Abstract: A graded index antireflection layer may be formed on a transparent crystalline member such as a sapphire member. The graded index layer may include aluminum oxide and silicon oxide. The graded index layer may extend from a first surface at the transparent member to a second surface. The fraction of aluminum oxide in the graded index layer may be at a maximum at the first surface so that the index of refraction of the graded index layer at the first surface matches the index of refraction of the transparent member and may be at a minimum at the second surface so the index of refraction of the graded index layer is minimized at the second surface. The graded index layer may be annealed to form aluminum oxide nanocrystals in the graded index layer and to form a polycrystalline aluminum oxide adhesion layer at the first surface.

A coating may be formed on an inner surface of a display cover layer for the display or on an inner surface of the rear housing. The coating may include one or more inorganic layers such as inorganic layers in a thin-film interference filter or other layer of material. A buffer layer having a polymer with adhesion promotion additive and embedded silicon oxide particles may be interposed between the coating and a glass layer forming the rear housing or between a patterned indium tin oxide coating on a display cover layer and an adhesive layer that attaches a pixel array to the display cover layer.
