摘要： A method and an apparatus for measuring the density variations, static and dynamic, in substances that are at least partially transparent to electromagnetic waves is disclosed. A special birefringement crystal phase shifting assembly encodes the angle of incidence resulting from the refractive effects of the electromagnetic waves having passed through a density variation. The angle of incidence is encoded as a poralization phase shift. Specifically, the poralization phase shift is between the ordinary and the extraordinary rays. That poralization phase shift has a known and definable relationship to the gas density experienced by the electromagnetic wave during its path.

摘要： Recombinant Factor IX characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic animals that incorporate chimeric DNA molecules according to the present invention. Transgenic animals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes Factor IX, such that the foreign DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature animal. Particularly efficient expression was accomplished using a chimeric construct comprising a mammary gland specific promoter, Factor IX cDNA that lacked the complete or any portion of the 5′-untranslated and 3′-untranslated region, which is substituted with a 5′- and 3′-end of the mouse whey acidic protein gene. In vitro cell cultures of cells explanted from the transgenic mammal of the invention and methods of producing Factor IX from such said culture and methods of treating hemophilia B are also described.

摘要： A lightweight telescopic lens of monolithic construction is revealed that corporates additional refractive and reflective curved surfaces to produce all the optical functions performed by an ordinary telescope. A pair of such lenses may be mounted in an eyeglass frame to yield a telescope that can be worn like a pair of eyeglasses, thus affording superior image stability as well as free the user's hands. Minor modifications involving the use of several menisci of a different index of refraction from that of the core lens can be made to achieve achromatism of emergent light from achromatic input light. The entire core lens can also be shaped into a meniscus to take advantage of the principle of total internal reflection, thereby increasing the light-gathering aperture while at the same time rendering the lens even more compact and lightweight.

摘要： A fuel dispensing nozzle is disclosed and includes a housing having a hollow main body portion and a handle portion with a hand-grip spaced from the main body portion, an elongate nozzle body mounted in the main body portion of the housing and having a fuel passageway extending longitudinally therethrough in a generally straight line devoid of any abrupt changes in direction, main valve means disposed in the fuel passageway for controlling the flow of fuel through the nozzle, manually operable valve actuating means, a spout for insertion into the fill opening of a vehicle fuel tank and having three integrally formed passageways therethrough comprising a fuel passageway, a vapor recovery passageway and a shut-off, venturi-vacuum passageway, a vapor recovery passageway through the main body and handle portions of the housing, a venturi-vacuum means for shutting off the flow of fuel through the nozzle when the vehicle fuel tank is full, attitude responsive means for preventing the opening of the main valve when the nozzle is not in the proper attitude for insertion of the spout into the fill opening of the vehicle fuel tank and attitude responsive valve means in the vapor recovery passageway in the housing for closing the vapor recovery passageway when the nozzle is not in position for insertion of the spout into the fill opening of the vehicle fuel tank. The housing and nozzle body are molded of a composite resin and the spout is extruded of a lightweight metal.

摘要： A base mount supports a secondary mount in surface facing relation and a pair of these mount assemblies are positioned in spaced relation to receive a pallet stringer between them. The mounts support circular cutter discs which are disposed in axially aligned pairs and also in laterally aligned pairs whereby to be capable of severing nails on opposite edges of a stringer in a single pass of a stringer through the space between the laterally spaced mounts. The base mounts support the secondary mounts and are capable of being retrofitted to existing machines. The base and secondary mounts are secured by cross plates that have a cutting edge to form a backup cutter for the cutter discs. The secondary mounts are hingedly supported on the base mounts by a cross hinge at the rear of the mounts and a spring and limit assembly is provided between the mounts to allow adjustment of the mounts for different dimensioned stringers. The cutter discs are supported on the mounts by bearings that provide lateral adjustment of the cutter discs. The bearings are compact in their structure and compactly positioned in the mounts for ruggedness and long life.

摘要： A network for managing account addresses (such as for credit card accounts) where correspondence and other communications mailed to account holders may have different purposes (e.g., credit card statement, new credit card, marketing correspondence). The network has a database for storing addresses and a database management system for retrieving those addresses. A default address is provided when there is no address stored in the database for the intended purpose of a mailing. The addresses are in categories, with each category associated with a different communication purpose, and with multiple addresses in each category. The multiple addresses within each category may be permanent, temporary or repeating. If temporary or repeating, effective start and end dates are associated with the addresses. There may be multiple cardholders for each account, in which case the address categories (and multiple addresses within each category) are associated with each cardholder.

摘要： Polarization phase plate Assembly comprises at least two uniaxial crystal plates which are identical to each other in structure and dimension and a retarder plate sandwiched between the two uniaxial crystal plates. Initially the optic axes of the crystal plates are aligned to be parallel with each other. Then the plates are subsequently rotated around the normals of the plates by an equal twist angle but in opposite directions. When a beam of light is passed through the assembly post-twist, the result is high-quality fringes that are straight, smooth and capable of exhibiting close to 100% contrast. The fringes have a sinusoidal cross-fringe profile and vary in number in relation to the degree of the twist angle.

摘要： A fuel dispensing nozzle is disclosed and includes a main body portion containing a fuel passageway and a main valve controlling the flow of fuel through the fuel passageway. A lever extends from the body portion which is operable by the hand of a user holding the nozzle to open the main valve to allow fuel flow through the nozzle and a lever guard is attached to the body and extends around and under the lever. A hold-open clip is pivotally mounted to the lever guard. The lever includes notches which are positioned relative to the hold-open clip so that when the hold-open clip is rotated by the user into its operative position it may engage a notch in the lever and hold the lever in a position where the main valve is opened to allow fuel flow without requiring the user to continue to hold the lever. A removable lockout member is attached to the lever to prevent operation in the automatic hold-open mode by preventing engagement of the hold-open clip with a notch in the lever. The lockout member includes a retention device to prevent manual removal of the lockout member once it is attached to the lever.
