Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a system that implements a downlink transmission mode that precodes sequences of symbols using a precoder matrix selected from a codebook. Linear transformations are performed on the sequences of precoded symbols using a distribution matrix. The distribution matrix is configured so that each of a plurality of precoder matrices provides perfect steering of transmit power to a corresponding one of a plurality of disjoint subsets of the antenna ports used for the downlink transmission mode. Also, the distribution matrix can be configured so that at least one precoder matrix provides peak power at all of the antenna ports used for the downlink transmission mode.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a system to provide wireless service to user equipment using licensed radio frequency spectrum and unlicensed RF spectrum. The system comprises a controller and a plurality of radio points to transmit and receive radio frequency signals to and from the user equipment using the licensed RF spectrum. The system further comprises a wireless termination to transmit and receive radio frequency signals to and from the user equipment using unlicensed RF spectrum. The controller is configured to use a mobility group for providing the wireless service to the user equipment using the unlicensed RF spectrum and a plurality of WLAN access points. The controller is configured to establish an interface with the wireless termination for the mobility group to communicate control plane data to the wireless termination associated with providing the wireless service to the user equipment using the unlicensed RF spectrum. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a communication system comprising a plurality baseband units; and a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the baseband units using a switched Ethernet network. Each baseband unit is associated with a respective subset of the remote units. Each baseband unit is configured to communicate baseband data with the respective subset of the remote units associated with that baseband unit over the switched Ethernet network. Each baseband unit and remote unit is configured to perform at least some baseband processing associated with serving the respective cell. The communication system is configured so that one of the baseband units is a master baseband unit and is configured to transmit time stamp messages with the remote units associated with the master baseband unit and with the remote units associated with the other baseband units of the plurality of baseband units.

Abstract: A communication system includes remote units to exchange RF signals with mobile devices, at least some of the RF signals comprising information destined for, or originating from, a mobile device. The communication system also includes at least one controller or controller resource communicatively coupled to an external network and configured to assign airlink resources to the user equipment. The at least one controller or controller resource is separated from the remote units by an intermediate network comprising a switched Ethernet network over which data corresponding to the information is carried between the at least one controller or controller resource and the remote units. Two or more of the remote units are configured to belong to the same communication cell. The at least one controller or controller resource is configured to assign two or more of the user equipment in the same communication cell to simultaneously use a same airlink resource.

Abstract: Among other things, a communication system comprising remote units and a controller is described. The remote units wirelessly exchanges radio frequency (RF) signals with mobile devices. Each RF signal comprises information destined for, or originating from, at least one of the mobile devices. The remote units and the controller communicate baseband data corresponding to the information across an intermediate network. The remote units each implement at least some physical layer processing for an air interface used to wirelessly communicate with the mobile devices. Two or more of the remote units transmit a downlink reference signal to a mobile device of the mobile devices.

Abstract: A communication system includes a remote unit that exchanges radio frequency signals with mobile devices, at least some of the radio frequency signals comprising information destined for, or originating from, a mobile device, the remote unit being configured to perform first physical layer processing. A controller is separated from the remote unit by a switched Ethernet network, wherein data corresponding to the information is transmitted in frames between the controller and the remote unit. At least some of the data comprises baseband data that is transmitted in frequency domain. The controller and the remote unit are configured to transmit time stamp messages on the switched Ethernet network to synchronize a controller clock and a remote unit clock. The controller is configured to advance downlink subframe timing relative to the remote unit, when transmitting on the switched Ethernet network, based on a measured transport delay across the switched Ethernet network.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a communication system comprising a remote unit comprising a remote unit local clock and a controller communicatively coupled to the remote unit using a switched Ethernet network. The remote unit is configured to synchronize the remote unit local clock to a reference timing source using timing messages communicated over the switched Ethernet network with the remote unit. The communication system is configured to transmit the timing messages and baseband data so as to reduce a level of contention encountered by the timing messages in connection with being communicated over the switched Ethernet network.

The at least one controller is communicatively coupled to the at least one remote unit. All physical layer processing for an air interface is implemented in the at least one remote unit. All Media Access Control (MAC) layer processing for the air interface is implemented in the at least one controller.

Abstract: A communication system includes remote units to exchange radio frequency (RF) signals with mobile devices, at least some of the RF signals comprising information destined for, or originating from, a mobile device. The communication system also includes a controller comprising one or more modems and connected to an external network, at least one of the modems being a baseband modem and being configured to pass first data corresponding to the information. The controller is separated from the remote units by an intermediate network over which second data corresponding to the information is carried in frames between the controller and the remote units. The second data comprises baseband data, and at least some of the baseband data is compressed in a frequency domain. The remote units and the controller are configured to compress the baseband data for transmission over the intermediate network.
