A fluid injector assembly extending along a longitudinal axis comprising a housing, and an injector positioned within the housing, the injector comprising a injector body having an interior cavity, a plunger positioned within the interior cavity and comprising a plunger body, a fluid delivery passage along at least a portion of the plunger body, and a plunger tip positioned at a downstream end of the plunger body, the fluid delivery passage comprising a longitudinal passage and at least one internal swirl passage, and the internal swirl passage being angled relative to the longitudinal axis and extending from the longitudinal passage to an opening upstream of the plunger tip, and a nozzle positioned at a downstream end of the injector body and including at least one nozzle passage, fluid being delivered from an upstream end of the injector to the at least one nozzle passage through the fluid delivery passage.

The present disclosure provides a fuel injector for an internal combustion engine with a fuel injector body having a valve chamber, a first conduit in fluid communication with the valve chamber for a first flow of fuel having a first pressure, and a second conduit in fluid communication with the valve chamber for a second flow of fuel having a second pressure. The fuel injector further includes a valve member configured to move between the first conduit and the second conduit. Additionally, an actuator of the fuel injector is configured to move the valve member during a fuel injection cycle. The fuel injector is configured to operate in at least three modes.

A fuel injector is provided that creates variable spray characteristics to effectively reduce emissions, such as NOx emissions and particulate matter. The injector includes a nozzle valve element of the outwardly opening type including a fuel delivery passage and spray holes. The nozzle valve element is operable to move to a low lift position to cause fuel flowing from the spray holes to impinge on the injector body and to deflect toward the combustion chamber, and to move to a high lift position to cause fuel flowing from the spray holes to avoid impingement on injector body and flow in an obstructed manner directly into the combustion chamber. An annular chamber may be formed in the nozzle valve element adjacent the spray holes to receive fuel.

The disclosure provides an improved fuel injector and method of operating the fuel injector to provide at least two different types of fuel spray to a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. The two types of spray are formed by providing a first fuel pressure to the fuel injector during a first portion of an injection event at a first pressure and providing a second fuel pressure to the fuel injection during a second portion of the injection event, and maintaining a substantially constant fuel flow rate throughout the injection event.

The present disclosure provides an improved system and method of operating a fuel injector of an engine to provide at least two different types of fuel spray in a combustion chamber of the engine by application of ultrasonic pulses to fuel in the fuel injector during an injection event. A first type of spray includes larger droplets that reduce the effective diffusion combustion area around the droplets and a second type of spray includes relatively small droplets that increase the effective diffusion combustion area around the droplets.
