Abstract: A method for controlling a wind farm electrical power system is presented. The wind farm electrical power system includes a controller and a plurality of wind turbines electrically connected to an electrical grid through a point of interconnection. Each wind turbine includes a voltage regulator. The method includes receiving, via the controller, one or more electrical signals associated with the point of interconnection for a frequency domain. Further, the method includes estimating, via an estimator of the controller, a voltage sensitivity of the electrical grid using the one or more electrical signals. Moreover, the method includes dynamically controlling a voltage of the wind farm electrical power system at the point of interconnection based on the voltage sensitivity.

Abstract: An electrical power system includes a system-level controller and a plurality of clusters of subsystems defining a stator power path and a converter power path for providing power to the power grid. The converter power path includes a partial power transformer. The system further includes a cluster transformer connecting each cluster to the power grid and a plurality of cluster-level controllers communicatively coupled with the system-level controller. Each of the clusters is communicatively coupled with one of the cluster-level controllers. Thus, the system-level controller regulates system-level active and/or reactive power based on required active or reactive power for the system, respectively, and compares the system-level active or reactive power with preferred values thereof. Further, the system-level controller receives feedback signal(s) from the cluster-level controllers, generates cluster-level power command(s) based on the comparison and the feedback signal(s), and sends the cluster-level power commands to the cluster-level controllers.

Abstract: A method for optimizing a hybrid wind system including a wind farm having a plurality of wind turbines and one or more energy storage units, is presented. The method includes acquiring actual wind power data associated with one or more dispatch windows. The method includes determining forecasted wind farm power estimates corresponding to the dispatch windows using a plurality of forecast schemes. The method includes computing difference values by comparing the forecasted wind farm power estimates to the actual wind power data. The method includes identifying a wind power forecast scheme based at least in part on the computed difference values and balancing a penalty to the grid with life consumption of the energy storage units while regulating the wind turbines and the energy storage units based at least in part on a subsequent forecasted wind farm power estimate generated using the identified wind power forecast scheme.

Abstract: A method for controlling a power output of a power generating unit includes receiving at least two measurement data sets from a location of integration of a power generating unit to an electrical grid. Each measurement data set includes a plurality of electrical parameters. The method further includes generating a grid model of the electrical grid based on the at least two measurement data sets. The grid model is characterized by an equivalent grid voltage and an equivalent grid impedance. The method further includes computing a strength value of the electrical grid based on the grid model, using the at least two measurement data sets. The method also includes controlling the power output of a power generating unit based on the strength value of the electrical grid.

Abstract: A method for operating a wind turbine power system that supplies real and reactive power to a grid includes operating a generator of the wind turbine power system up to a first speed limit. The method also includes monitoring a wind speed at the wind turbine power system. When the wind speed drops below a predetermined threshold, the method includes reducing the first speed limit of the generator to a reduced speed limit of the generator. Further, the method includes operating the generator at the reduced speed limit for as long as the wind speed remains below the predetermined threshold so as to optimize a tip-speed-ratio of the wind turbine power system during low wind speeds, thereby increasing power production of the wind turbine power system at low wind speeds.

Abstract: A method for estimating grid strength of a power grid connected to a renewable energy farm having a plurality of renewable energy power systems includes measuring, at least, a voltage, an active power, and a reactive power at a point of interconnection of the renewable energy farm to the power grid. The method also includes determining a sensitivity of the voltage to at least one of the active power or the reactive power at the point of interconnection. Further, the method includes determining the grid strength of the power grid as a function of the sensitivity of the voltage to at least one of the active power or the reactive power at the point of interconnection. In addition, the method includes dynamically determining at least one of an active power command or a reactive power command for the renewable energy farm at the point of interconnection based on the grid strength. Moreover, the method includes distributing at least one of the active power command or the reactive power command to individual controllers of the plurality of renewable energy power systems and a farm-level controller of the renewable energy farm.
