摘要: The invention is a method and apparatus for determining an approximate network distance using one or more reference points. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the method comprises the steps of selecting at least one reference point positioned along a path between first and second points of a network, generating first distance metric information associated with at least one path associating a first point and the at least one reference point, generating second distance metric information associated with at least one path associating a second point and the at least one reference point, and determining a total approximate distance between the first point and the second point along one or more paths based on the first and second distance metric information. In one or more embodiments, the second distance metric information is published to one or more servers providing domain name server mapping information and the second distance metric information is provided to the first point along with requested mapping information. In one or more embodiments, total approximate distance information between a client and multiple servers providing a desired service is determined and a server associated with a shortest total approximate distance is selected from which to obtain the service.

摘要: A method and apparatus for encoding characteristics for the retrieval of information. Depending on the characteristics, some methods for retrieving information may be preferred. If information is too large to utilize UDP, then TCP may be preferred. In addition, if information is not cacheable, then it is preferable to retrieve the information directly from the server instead of searching the cache first. A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is utilized on the internet to specify the application protocol (e.g., http), the domain name (e.g., www.sun.com), and file location (e.g., /users/hcn/index.html). The suffix of a file indicator is utilized to identify how to process the data or information subsequent to retrieval. One or more embodiments of the invention provide for encoding characteristics of data to be transferred that indicates or hints at an optimal method to retrieve the data. For example, the URL may specify that TCP is the preferred transfer protocol, thereby avoiding an attempted transfer using UDP. Additionally, the encoding may specify that the client should preferably retrieve the information directly from the server instead of searching the proxy cache. The characteristics or preferred retrieval method may be encoded in a any portion of a URL. Additionally, one or more embodiments of the invention provide for backwards compatibility with existing internet browsers by encoding the characteristics in the file location portion of the URL instead of the application protocol identifier portion.

摘要: A method to dynamically generate an email signature by merging information provided by a sender with a template that is centrally managed, but does not require the template to be distributed to the end-user devices. The email signature can contain various information including Name, Title, Phone, Location and more. Email signatures can also contain corporate or marketing information such as event information, job posting and other relevant content.

摘要: Briefly, in accordance with at least one embodiment, a content creator/editor may have content reviewed by one or more reviewers. The content may include one or more signatures or characteristic values to correlate an annotation of the content made by one of the reviewers with respect to a flow of time of the content. The content creator/editor may generate a review file for the content and send the review file to the reviewers. The reviewers may provide annotations to the content with respect to the flow of time of the content, where the annotations may be correlated to the content via the signature or characteristic values of the content, and the reviewers may store the annotations independent of the content. The review process may be managed independent of a managing server where the content creator/editor may generate a review file and send the review file to the reviewers using a client content creation and editing software program on local machine of the content creator/editor. The reviewers may receive the review file, which may include content or the content may be streamed to a local machine of the reviewers using a client review program to manage the obtaining and reviewing of the content. The reviewers may generate annotations of the content independent of content and save them in a file that is sent back to the content creator/editor for aggregation of the annotations and selective viewing of the annotations of the content.

摘要: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for semi-centralized routing. One of the methods includes receiving one or more routes and determining that a received route identifies a new set of paths different from each routing path group in a maintained set of routing path groups. A new routing path group is created that corresponds to the new set of paths. The new routing path group is assigned an identifier of the routing path group. The new routing path group is converted to a corresponding new flow path group. A flow path group that was converted from the routing path group is replaced on a network device with the converted new flow path group.
