Abstract:
An implant retention device is provided to assist in restraining movement of a nuclear implant and to assist in preventing expulsion of the nuclear implant through an incision portal or defect in the annular wall. In general, the implant retention device blocks or obstructs at least a portion of an opening in the annular wall, thereby keeping the implant from exiting the nuclear space through the annular opening. In one form, the implant retention device comprises an expulsion prevention member positioned adjacent the nuclear implant and configured to transition between a compressed position and an expanded position. In another form, the implant retention device may comprise a mounting portion to be positioned adjacent one of the vertebral bodies, a blocking portion for at least partially obstructing the annular opening, and an end projection at a terminal end of the blocking portion to resist expulsion of the implant through the annular opening. In yet another form, the implant retention device may include an elongate blocking member having annulus connector portions extending from each side of the blocking member for engaging with an annular wall.
Abstract:
A network (10), such as a computer network, is disclosed. The network (10) has a plurality of nodes (20; 120) and includes a first node (30, 130) for storing pieces of a digital object and having a storage (40, 50; 140, 150). A plurality of connections are present between the first node (30, 130) and the plurality of nodes (20; 120). The first node (30, 130) has a requester for requesting one or more pieces of the digital object, a transmitter for transferring one or more pieces of the digital object to at least one further node among the plurality of nodes (20; 120), a receiver for receiving content availability messages from at least some of the plurality of nodes, and a sender for sending a limited content availability message to at least one further node (20; 120) among the plurality of nodes (20, 120). The limited content availability message indicates a subset but not all of the pieces of the digital object available through the first node (30; 130).
Abstract:
A sound-cancelling flow-through muffler includes a linear first inner passage, and a curved or zig-zagged second outer passage that wraps around or surrounds the inner passage and that is situated between the linear first inner passage and an exterior wall of the muffler. The outer passage has a length that is equal to, or a multiple of, one-half the wavelength of sound to be cancelled by the muffler such that sound exiting the inner and outer passages destructively interferes or cancels in a sound cancellation or conversion chamber. In addition, the walls of the outer passage serve as a heat sink to extract heat from the exhaust stream and conduct the heat to the outside of the housing. Alternatively, the outer passage may have a closed such that reflects sound back toward the inner passage for cancellation, the walls of the outer passage continuing to serve as a heat sink to extract heat from the exhaust stream and conduct the heat to the outside of the housing.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a composition of matter of the formula (X1)a—(F1)d—(X2)b—(F2)e—(X3)c (I) and multimers thereof, in which F1 and F2 are half-life extending moieties, and d and e are each independently 0 or 1, provided that at least one of d and e is 1; X1, X2, and X3 are each independently -(L)f-P-(L)g-, and f and g are each independently 0 or 1; P is a toxin peptide of no more than about 80 amino acid residues in length, comprising at least two intrapeptide disulfide bonds; L is an optional linker; and a, b, and c are each independently 0 or 1, provided that at least one of a, b and c is 1. Linkage to the half-life extending moiety or moieties increases the in vivo half-life of the toxin peptide, which otherwise would be quickly degraded. A pharmaceutical composition comprises the composition and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Also disclosed are a DNA encoding the inventive composition of matter, an expression vector comprising the DNA, and a host cell comprising the expression vector. Methods of treating an autoimmune disorder, such as, but not limited to, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, contact-mediated dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, asthma, allergy, restinosis, systemic sclerosis, fibrosis, scleroderma, glomerulonephritis, Sjogren syndrome, inflammatory bone resorption, transplant rejection, graft-versus-host disease, and lupus and of preventing or mitigating a relapse of a symptom of multiple sclerosis are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A magnetostrictive transducer including a plurality of magnetostrictive laminates each having a first end and a second end. The first and second ends of the laminates include openings. The laminates are arranged in a stacked configuration and bonded together by solder at the first and second ends. At the first and second ends the solder extends through the openings of the laminates forming a solder bar therein. The solder bars bond the laminates together with increased mechanical strength and also provide increased electrical contact between the laminates.
Abstract:
A device for connecting two spinal rods is provided. In one form, the device includes two clamping devices for receiving and locking to spinal rods and a central bridge or plate member that couples the clamping devices. In one aspect, the clamping devices are unitary members with deflectable jaw portions that snap-fit and then locked by operation of actuators. In another aspect, one or both of the clamping devices are adjustably coupled to the central bridge or plate member to allow at least translation and pivoting or rotation of the clamping devices relative to a central axis of the elongate bridge member. The clamping devices may be coupled to the bridge or plate member with the same locking actuator that causes clamping of the clamp device so that the positions of the clamp device and the spinal rod are locked into place by manipulation of only a single locking actuator.
Abstract:
Structural elements comprised of functionalized material in a rapidly setting resin. The structural elements are rapidly deployable and arranged as structures that provide ballistic and impact resistance. The structures are fabricated using specific molds that shape a specific rapid cure resin-filler mixture.
Abstract:
This invention uses a novel shape of airfoil to achieve an improved lift to drag ratio and to improve performance at higher angles of attack. The airfoil has a three dimensional wave pattern that modifies the shape of a traditional airfoil to coordinate the airflow through channels on both the top and bottom sides. The uniquely shaped airfoil of this invention could have many uses including a wind turbine blade. This invention not only provides for a more efficient device by improving the effective angle of attack and lift/drag ratio, but also provides for a quiet airflow thus greatly reducing nuisance noise over conventional devices.
Abstract:
