A system includes private lines for carrying respective signals which each have at least one D channel for control information, and plural B channels for data. The system also includes a multiplexer connected to the private lines, which receives the signals and generates a multiplexed signal for transmission on a digital multiplex interface. The system further includes a demultiplexer which receives the multiplexed signal received from the digital multiplex interface, to generate signals for transmission on the private lines. The multiplexer and demultiplexer are designed so that the total number of D channels and B channels can be changed without requiring significant effort or modification of either the multiplexer or the demultiplexer. The system also includes a testing device which transmits and returns a multiplexed signal from the multiplexer, to the demultiplexer. The returned multiplexed signal can be used to test the system without requiring involvement of external devices.

A bonded ceramic structure is fabricated by inserting a plurality of ceramic tubular members respectively in holes formed in a perforated ceramic plate member and bonding the same to the perforated ceramic plate. A clearance is formed between the outer circumference of the tubular member or that of a ceramic sleeve fitted on the tubular member, and the surface of the hole, and the clearance is filled up with a bonding material forming a bonding layer to join the tubular members to the plate by a high strength at a high positional accuracy. A method of fabricating such a bonded ceramic structure spreads a fusible bonding material on at least one major surface of the plate member, inserts the tubular members in the holes of the plate member, and fuses the bonding material so that the fused bonding material flows into the clearance between the surface of each hole and the tubular member to form a bonding layer continuously extending over the surface of the plate and in the clearances.

An apparatus is provided for driving a discharge lamp, the discharge lamp having first and second electrodes, each of the first and second electrodes having first and second terminals. The apparatus includes a switching circuit coupled to the first terminals of the first and second electrodes of the discharge lamp for supplying a high frequency signal to the discharge lamp for igniting the discharge lamp. A starting circuit is provided connected to the second terminals of the first and second electrodes of the discharge lamp and including an inductor and capacitor connected in parallel across the discharge lamp. Alternately, a thermister is provided between parallel connected conductor and capacitor and one of the second terminals of the first electrode of the discharge lamp. Furthermore, circuitry is provided which is connected between the switching circuit and the thermister for deactivating the switching circuit when the thermister is heated to a specified temperature.

A waste heat recovery apparatus is disclosed which recovers the waste heat of high temperature exhaust gas discharged from a furnace. The apparatus includes a radiation body made of ceramic material, which is formed with a heat radiation surface arranged adjacent to an exhaust gas outlet of the furnace, and directed toward the inside of the furnace. The radiation body has a plurality of regular channels allowing passage of the exhaust gas therethrough. Exhaust gas passes through the channels and heats the radiation body, and a substantial amount of the holding heat of the exhaust gas is radiated from the radiation surface toward the inside of the furnace, allowing an efficient waste heat recovery.
