Abstract: A waveguide display includes a plurality of grating layers, the plurality of grating layers characterized by two or more different base refractive indices and including a set of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs). Each VBG of the set of VBGs is configured to diffract display light in a different respective field-of-view (FOV) and wavelength range. The set of VBGs includes a plurality of groups of VBGs. VBGs in each respective group of the plurality of groups of VBGs are characterized by a same grating period and include at least one VBG in each grating layer of the plurality of grating layers.

Abstract: A display system includes a source of unpolarized image light, and a stack of polarization-selective optical elements operable to switchably convert the unpolarized image light into two orthogonally polarized light beams, each of which being switchable in at least one beam characteristic. An output polarizer selects one of the two orthogonally polarized light beams for providing to a user. A depolarizer may be disposed between an electronic display emitting polarized light and the stack. The depolarizer may be in the form of an LC bilayer with randomized in-plane optic axis.

Abstract: According to examples, a display system may include a disparity sensing detector, collection optics, and a first lens assembly. The first lens assembly may include a first projector to output a first display light associated with a first image and a first waveguide for propagating the first display light to the collection optics, in which the collection optics is to direct the first display light to the disparity sensing detector. The display system may also include a second lens assembly including a second projector to output a second display light associated with a second image and a second waveguide for propagating the second display light to the collection optics, in which the collection optics is to direct the second display light to the disparity sensing detector.

Abstract: A head-mounted device (HMD) contains a display, an optics block, a redirection structure, and an eye tracking system. The display is configured to emit image light and provide it to an eye of a user. The optics block is configured to direct the emitted light in order to allow it to reach the eye. The eye tracking system contains a camera, an illumination source, and a controller. The camera is configured to capture image data using infrared light reflected from the eye. The controller is configured to use this image data to determine eye tracking information. The illumination source is configured to illuminate the eye with infrared light for the purpose of taking eye tracking measurements. The redirection structure is configured to direct infrared light reflected from the eye to the eye tracking system. In multiple embodiments, redirection structures may comprise prism arrays, lenses, liquid crystal layers, or grating structures.

Abstract: A waveguide display system include a waveguide, an input coupler configured to couple display light into the waveguide, a first pupil expander, and a second pupil expander. The first pupil expander is configured to deflect, at a first plurality of locations along a first direction, the display light towards the second pupil expander. The second pupil expander is configured to deflect, at a second plurality of locations along a second direction different from the first direction, the display light from the first pupil expander towards an eyebox of the waveguide display system. At least one of the input coupler, the first pupil expander, or the second pupil expander includes transflective mirrors that are tilted within the waveguide such that the transflective mirrors are inconspicuous when viewed from an oblique angle.

A method to improve a yield of silicon backplane displays includes connecting a diode having a resolution to a backplane and repairing a defect on a pixel display area by dividing the pixel display area into at least one subcircuit, while improving geometry stylization transfer for 3D models of real-world environments. A method for suppressing crosstalk for user conversations includes receiving multiple speech signals captured by multiple microphones and generating directional data for the multiple speech signals based on spatial filtering.

Abstract: A near eye display (NED) includes multiple PBP optical elements combined with one or more C-plates to improve optical angular performance. The PBP optical elements may be configured for beam steering or for focusing light to a point. A C-plate may reduce or eliminate an undesirable polarization phase shift introduced by the PBP optical elements to angular, off-axis light. Birefringence of the PBP optical elements produces such a polarization phase shift. A C-plate provides an additional polarization phase shift that is opposite to the extra polarization phase shift by the PBP optical elements. Thus, the additional polarization phase shift by the C-plate at least partially reduces the phase shift by the PBP element.

Abstract: A waveguide assembly is provided. The waveguide assembly includes a pair of pupil-replicating waveguides. The first pupil-replicating waveguide is configured for receiving an input beam of image light and providing an intermediate beam comprising multiple offset portions of the input beam. The second pupil-replicating waveguide is configured for receiving the intermediate beam from the first pupil-replicating waveguide and providing an output beam comprising multiple offset portions of the intermediate beam. The input beam may be expanded by the waveguide assembly in such a manner that pupil gaps are reduced or eliminated.
