Abstract:
An optical disc drive compatible with optical discs of different types, for example, is provided. For focusing, through an optical system used in common with the different types of optical discs, a laser beam emitted from a selected one of a plurality of light sources disposed apart from each other radially of the optical disc, the optical system is moved radially of the optical disc corresponding to the selection of the light source for emitting the laser light. Namely, it is possible to prevent the optical property from being deteriorated when a single optical pickup is used in common with such optical discs of different types.
Abstract:
The present invention provides, at a lower cost, a highly reliable data reading method and data reading apparatus that can improve backward sequential reading performance. The disk drive is provided with a magnetic disk and a control section having an HDC, a RAM, an MPU controlling the operation of the entire HDD, including control of the HDC, a ROM, and an I/F for connecting to an external host device. The control section executes a backward reading detection step that detects backward reading, a step of receiving a command that reads a block of a first length from a first LBA, a step that reads a block of the first length from the first LBA when backward reading is detected, and a step that pre-fetches a second block from a second LBA smaller than the first LBA; when backward reading is detected, upon completion of the reading of data from the disk, the reading of data predicted to be requested by the next command begins immediately.
Abstract:
A construction element that contains a shape memory element which changes shape in response to a change in the temperature of the memory element. The temperature is varied by a fluid which flows through channels adjacent to the shape memory element. The fluid typically flows through an inner channel of the memory element and an outer element formed by the element and an outer elastic pipe. A plurality of shape memory elements can be coupled together to create a robotic arm or an endoscopic instrument. The arm or endoscope can change shape by varying the temperature of the fluid. The fluid temperature and the corresponding shape of the arm/endoscope can be controlled by a computer.
Abstract:
A gel actuator includes: a gel having a projected part made of an inductive high-polymer material; a positive electrode disposed so as to be in contact with a top of the projected part; and a negative electrode disposed in a position sandwiching the projected part in a height direction in cooperation with the positive electrode. When voltage is applied between the positive and negative electrodes, creep deformation occurs so that the projected parts adhere to the positive electrode side, and the gel contracts in the thickness direction.
Abstract:
A stacked conduit assembly includes: a conduit part in which a plurality of plate-like parts are stacked and integrated, and a hollow conduit is formed in an inner layer; and a control board to be fastened to the conduit part by a screw. The plate-like parts include a plurality of plate-like parts that respectively form a side wall, an upper face, and a bottom face of the conduit, a pilot hole is formed in a plate-like part that forms the side wall of the conduit, and the screw is a tapping screw that taps by itself in the pilot hole and is fastened. Thus, a stacked conduit assembly that can stabilize a screw engagement state and realize downsizing or thinning of devices and cost reduction can be obtained.
Abstract:
A safety controller provides a safety output to a target controlled system such as a magnet contactor based on an input from an input device such as a safety door switch to thereby control operation of machine equipment. Safety output parts serve to transmit a solid-state output as the safety output and a connection output part transmits a connection output to another safety controller. A control part having two CPUs controls the safety output and the connection output according to a program based on the input from the input device. Two or more of such safety controllers are connected through their connecting output parts and the connecting input parts to together form a safety system.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the invention provide ways to write data in a load/unload area. In one embodiment, address numbers (ranging from 981 to 1065) whose order of addressing by host equipment is later than that of address numbers (ranging from 1 to 980) as logical block addresses (LBAs) assigned to data sectors in the data area are assigned as LBAs to data sectors whose absolute block addresses (ABAs) range from 1001 to 1100 in the load/unload area. As a result, when the host equipment performs addressing in a magnetic disk drive, the priority order given to the load/unload area becomes low. Accordingly, with the storage capacity being increased, it is possible to prevent the substantial performance from decreasing.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the invention relate to writing servo patterns onto a recording disk with a high degree of accuracy and with correct phases in a servo-pattern-writing process. An In-Drive SSW (TSSW) process is processing to write product servo patterns onto a recording disk on the basis of time aligned patterns. In the processing to write product servo patterns onto a recording disk, time intervals between time aligned patterns already written on an ID-side track are measured, and timings to write the product servo patterns onto the recording disk on the basis of the measured time intervals are determined. Product servo patterns are then written onto an OD-side track with the determined timings relative to detections of the time aligned patterns used as references. In this way, circumferential-direction positions of product servo patterns written on a track may be aligned to the corresponding circumferential-direction positions of product servo patterns written on an adjacent track.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the invention control a recovery procedure effectively in accordance with write conditions. In one embodiment, the data to be written into a sector includes not only user data but also recording condition data, which indicates the temperature prevalent during a write. If a data read is not accurately performed, a recovery procedure is executed. If a data read is accomplished by a retry and the temperature prevalent during a write is lower than predetermined, it is concluded that the employed medium is nondefective. Thus, the read data is rewritten into the same sector without being stored in a spare area. This prevents the spare area from being unnecessarily consumed.
