摘要: Apparatus and method for providing timing control signals for operation of an engine and other devices on a vehicle and/or operation of telecommunications equipment and/or computer equipment on the vehicle. A Satellite Positioning System (SATPS) antenna and receiver/processor receive and process signals from three or more SATPS satellites and determine and issue SATPS-determined timing pulses and time signals that indicate the time associated with each timing pulse. The pulse-to-pulse time separation .DELTA.t.sub.pp of these timing pulses is adjusted to provide a separation approximately equal to a selected pulse separation .DELTA.t.sub.incr. Alternatively, a supplementary timing device provides a sequence of timing pulses with pulse-to-pulse spacing that is adjustable by varying an environmental parameter .theta., such as temperature or electrical field, for this timing device. The supplementary timing device pulse-to-pulse separation is determined by the SATPS-determined time signals and the environmental parameter .theta. is varied so that .DELTA.t.sub.pp becomes approximately equal to a selected value .DELTA.t.sub.incr that can be used for timing signals on the vehicle. The supplementary timing device pulses can also be used where the SATPS-determined time signals and timing pulses are not available. The SATPS may be a Global Positioning System (GPS), a Global Orbiting Navigational Satellite System (GLONASS) or any other suitable satellite-based system.

摘要: A task description is stored in a database accessible by a mobile computer system. The mobile computer system receives positioning information corresponding to its geographic location and indexes the database based on the positioning information when the information indicates that the mobile computer system is in a geographic location that facilitates completion of a task associated with the task description. The database may be resident in the mobile computer system or accessible in other ways, for example, via the Internet. The task description preferably includes a geocode which corresponds to the geographic location at which completion of the task may be facilitated. The task description may also include textual, voice or other message which can be displayed and/or played back to a user. The positioning information may be obtained from a GPS satellite, a GLONASS satellite or a pseudolite. The mobile computer system may be a portable unit, such as a PDA, or integrated within a vehicle.

摘要: Methods for identification of, and compensation for, the effects of presence of a multipath signal in a received composite digital signal that includes a direct, distortion-free signal. A direct signal is additively or multiplicatively combined with a distinguishable indicium signal and the resultant signal is transmitted to a receiver. The indicium signal may be distinguished by use of a different frequency or by use of a bit pattern that cannot be included in a direct signal pattern. The receiver identifies the received indicium signal within the received signal, compares the received indicium signal with a reference signal that is substantially a replica of the transmitted indicium signal, determines what operations will convert the reference signal into the received indicium signal, and applies an inverse of these operations to the portion of the received signal that contains the received direct signal, to obtain an enhanced received direct signal with reduced multipath signal effects. An example of the conversion operation is discussed, which can be performed in near real time or in a post-processing mode.

摘要: A system for monitoring operation and location of a moving first vehicle relative to a second vehicle. A minimum separation distance between the first and second vehicles is estimated, based on the first vehicle velocity, and optionally on the second vehicle velocity, using location determination (LD) signals received from satellite-based transmitters from GPS, GLONASS and LEO satellites, or from ground-based signal sources such as LORAN signal towers, and using ranging signals from SONAR, RADAR or a similar system. The minimum separation distance is compared with the actual separation distance at selected times, and a vehicle driver is advised if the actual separation distance is too small, if the separation distance is decreasing too quickly, or if the second vehicle velocity is decreasing too quickly. The second vehicle may travel in the same traffic lane, in an adjacent lane, or on a road that intersects the road used by the first vehicle. Where the first and second vehicles travel on separate roads that will intersect, the system estimates whether the second vehicle will stop, or will be able to stop, at the intersection. The second vehicle may be a railroad car, such as a locomotive, or a road vehicle, such as an automobile, bus or truck. A maximum vehicle clear-view velocity, consistent with vehicle stopping within a selected distance, is estimated. Road conditions are estimated and compensated for in estimating the minimum separation distance and/or the maximum vehicle clear-view velocity.

摘要: Method and apparatus for tracking the location of, and for providing cellular telephone handoff for, a mobile cellphone user as the user moves from one cell to another. A boundary curve B12 between a first cell and an adjacent second cell is defined in an electronic map. First and second quasi-boundary curves QB1 and QB2, lying within the first and second cell, respectively, are defined, where each point on the curve QBi (i=1,2) lies at a selected distance from the boundary curve B12. A common region CR12 of points lying between the quasi-boundary curves QB1 and QB2 and including the boundary curve B12 is defined. The present cellphone location of the cellphone user is determined using a location determination system, such as GPS or GLONASS or a ground-based system. Cellular telephone service for the cellphone user is provided by a first cell site or by a second cell site, when the cellphone user is located within the first cell or the second cell, not including the overlap region CR12. When the cellphone user enters the region CR12 from within the first cell and proceeds toward the boundary curve B12, the user cellphone notifies at least one of the first and second cell sites that the cellphone user is about to leave the first cell and about to enter the second cell. The system advises the user if the cellphone is about to pass to another cell in which a cellular connection is likely to be dropped because no handoff cellular frequencies are available, or because the cellphone is about to enter a hole region where signal strength is less than an acceptable threshold value.

摘要: A method for improving the provision of emergency assistance services for an emergency site. An observer of an emergency event contacts an Emergency Assistance Services (EAS) operator, using a telephone to describe the type of emergency event and any special circumstances present. The EAS operator also receives the present location of the observer, using a location determination system that is connected to the telephone used by the observer. The EAS operator is provided with an electronic map showing the location of the observer and the location of at least one available EAS responder for the type of emergency event that has occurred. The EAS operator determines whether a given EAS responder has the equipment and/or trained personnel required to respond to the emergency event and, from a group of EAS responders who do so qualify, selects an EAS responder who is estimated to be able to reach the emergency site in the shortest time. The selected EAS responder is assigned to respond to the emergency event, and the EAS operator optionally monitors the EAS responder to verify that this responder has reached the emergency site. If the assigned EAS responder does not reach the emergency site, the EAS operator optionally and promptly assigns another EAS responder to the emergency event. The LD system can be a Satellite Positioning System, such as GPS or GLONASS, or can be an FM subcarrier system.

摘要: Method and apparatus for monitoring the present location of an emergency or general serviceperson, such as a firefighter or a hazardous materials spill clean-up specialist, assigned to perform emergency services at a designated site. The site diameter can be as small as a few meters or as large as several kilometers. The serviceperson's present location can be checked at selected time intervals with time periods ranging from a few hundred milliseconds to thousands of seconds, as desired. The serviceperson wears or carries a location-determining ("LD") unit that receives electromagnetic signals that contain information allowing determination of the present location of the LD unit, and thus of the serviceperson, from three or more signal sources. These signal sources may be FM subcarrier signal transmitters, or may be an integrated combination of FM subcarrier signal transmitters and (1) transmitters for a Loran, Omega, Decca, Tacan, JTIDS Relnav or PLRS or other ground-based system, or (2) transmitters for a satellite-based positioning system, such as GPS or GLONASS, or other broadcast sources. The relative phases or transmission times for the signals from each source are determined and provided for the LD unit. The present location of the serviceperson, or change thereof, is determined and transmitted to a central station at selected interrogation times, or upon occurrence of any of a specified group of other conditions. The central station transmits an alarm signal if one or more of the following conditions is present: (1) the worker's LD is not within the designated site; (2) the central station does not receive transmitted present location information from the LD unit for at least K consecutive interrogation times; or (3) the location of the LD unit changes by less than a selected threshold amount in a time interval of selected length .DELTA.t.sub.change ; or (4) a physiological indicium of the serviceperson is in a danger zone.
