Abstract: A turbine vane assembly for use in a gas turbine engine includes turbine vanes, a segmented inner vane support, and an outer vane support. The turbine vanes are arranged around a central axis of the engine. The inner vane support is arranged radially inwardly of the turbine vanes. The outer vane support includes a full-hoop outer support ring located radially outward of the plurality of turbine vanes and extends entirely circumferentially about the central axis. The outer vane support further includes a plurality of discrete support spars coupled to the full-hoop outer support ring and extending radially inward from the full-hoop outer support ring through an interior cavity of a respective turbine vane.

Abstract: There is proposed a method of surface-treating a cast intermetallic component, which is intended primarily to reduce or remove surface porosity from the component. The method includes the steps of: providing a cast intermetallic component; placing the component in an inert atmosphere; focussing a laser beam on a surface of the component; traversing the laser beam over at least a region of said surface while the component is in said inert atmosphere; and controlling the laser beam during said traversing step so as to locally melt the intermetallic material of the component to a depth of no more than 300 μm, as measured from said surface of the component.

Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing an article from powder material includes a canister, a sorter, a plurality of hoppers and at least one valve. The canister has a predetermined internal shape to define the shape of the powder metal article. The sorter sorts the powder material by the size of the powder particles, the shape of the powder particles and/or the flow characteristics of the powder particles. The hoppers contain powder material with different sizes of powder particles, different shapes of powder particles and/or powder particles with different flow characteristics. The hoppers are arranged to supply the sorted powder material to the canister. The at least one valve controls the proportions of the different powder materials supplied from the one or more of the different hoppers into the canister to control the packing density of the powder material in the canister at all positions in the canister.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing an article by hot pressing and ultrasonically inspecting the article comprises forming and filling a canister with powder material and evacuating and sealing the canister. Heat and pressure are applied to the canister to consolidate the powder material to form the article. The article within the canister is ultrasonically inspected by moving a transducer over the whole of the canister. The position of an interface between the article and the canister, and the thickness of the canister, at each position on the surface of the canister and if there are defects within the article are determined. The canister is then removed from the article by machining the canister using a machining tool, the movement of the tool is controlled such that at each position of the canister the tool removes the determined thickness of the canister for the corresponding position on the surface of the canister.

Abstract: A component is treated in a fluidized bed by insertion of only a treatment part of the component into the treatment chamber of a fluidized bed apparatus. The non-treatment part of the component is located substantially outside the treatment chamber and out of contact with the fluidized bed. The boundary between the treatment part and the non-treatment part of the component is defined by a boundary containment surface at a fixed location with respect to the component. The boundary containment surface may be a seal which seals between the component to be treated and an aperture in a side wall of the treatment chamber.

Abstract: A gearbox includes a sun gear, a plurality of planet gears, an annulus gear and a planet carrier. The planet carrier includes a first ring, second ring spaced axially from the first ring, a plurality of circumferentially spaced axles and a plurality of circumferentially spaced support structures extending axially between and secured to the first ring and second ring. Each planet gear is rotatably mounted on a respective one of the axles. Abstract: A method of heat treating a localised region of a component including providing a heat treatment assembly with two or more subassemblies. Each subassembly is configured to partially circumscribe a portion of the component for heat treatment. Each subassembly includes a housing configured to partially circumscribe a portion of the component. An insulator and a heater are provided within the housing and extend to partially circumscribe a component and are arranged such that the insulator is between a wall of the housing and the heater. The method includes positioning the subassemblies adjacently around the component so that the subassemblies fully circumscribe the component. The subassemblies are connected together. The method includes activating the heater to heat the component in a region adjacent the heater.
