    摘要: The instant invention relates to a process for controlling the viscosity of organic liquids by incorporating in said liquid a minor amount of polymer complex, and optionally a cosolvent for the ionic groups of said polymer. The polymer complex comprises the reaction product of a metal neutralized sulfonated polymer and a basic nitrogen-containing polymer, wherein the polymer complex is substantially soluble in said organic liquid, and pendant sulfonate groups which are substantially insoluble in said organic liquid. The optional cosolvent is selected which will solubilize the pendant sulfonate groups and provide a reasonably homogeneous mixture of solvent, cosolvent and polymer complex. The preferred compositions prepared by the method of the instant invention comprise an organic liquid having a solubility parameter of from 6 to 10.5 in combination with a polymer complex containing from 0.2 up to 10.0 mole % sulfonate groups and nitrogen-containing groups, and optionally a nonvolatile alcohol or amine cosolvent.

These blend compositions can be processed on conventional plastic fabrication equipment into polymeric articles having excellent physical properties.

    摘要: The present invention relates to a process for forming a gel having improved creep resistance at elevated temperatures and having a viscosity of at least about 100,000 cps which includes the steps forming a solvent system of an organic liquid and a water miscible cosolvent, the water miscible cosolvent being less than about 15 wt. % of the solvent system, a viscosity of the solvent system being less than about 1000 cps; dissolving a neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solvent system to form a solution, adding a free radical generating initiator to the solution at a concentration level of about 0.01 to about 1%, a concentration of the neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solution being about 0.5 to about 20 wt. %, a viscosity of the solution being less than about 20,000 cps; and adding under shear conditions about 5 to about 500 vol. % water to the solution having a viscosity less than about 20,000 cps, the water being immiscible with the solution and the water miscible cosolvent transferring from the solution phase to the water phase thereby causing the viscosity of said solution to increase from less than 20,000 cps to greater than 100,000 cps.

    摘要: A polymeric solution comprising: water; about 0.005 to about 0.5 moles of an inorganic acid, an inorganic case or an inorganic salt per 100 ml of such water; and about 0.1 to about 5.0 grams of a polymeric complex per 100 grams of said water, said polymeric complex produced by the interaction of a first water soluble copolymer formed from a water soluble nonionic monomer and an anionic comonomer by a free radical copolymerization, said first water soluble nonionic monomer being selected from the group consisting of acrylamide, methacrylamide and vinylpyrrolidone, said anionic comonomer being about 1 to about 35 weight percent of said first water soluble copolymer, said anionic comonomer containing anionic groups, said anionic comonomer being selected from the group consisting of metal styrene sulfonate, metal vinyl sulfonate, and a metal salt of 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonate; and a second water soluble copolymer formed from a second water soluble monomer and a cationic comonomer by a free radical copolymerization, said second water soluble monomer being selected from the group consisting of acrylamide, methacrylamide and vinyl pyrrolidone, said cationic comonomer being about 1 to about 34 weight percent of said second water soluble copolymer, said cationic comonmer containing cation group, said cationic comonomer being selected from the group consisting of N,N,N-trimethylammoniumpropylmethacrylamide and vinylpyridine or their quarternary salts, wherein the molar ratio of anionic to cationic functional groups in the water soluble polymer complex is about 50/1 to about 1.2/1 or from about 0.8/1 to about 1/50, said ratio always being such that there is at least an excess of said water soluble copolymers over the other said water soluble copolymer of at least about 20 mole percent.

    摘要: This invention relates to unique and novel polymer complexes between a metal neutralized sulfonated polymer and a tertiary amine terminated polylactone composition. The resulting polymer complexes have a variety of uses including those as diverse as adhesive agents, thermoplastic elastomers, additive uses wherein these materials can be utilized to compatibilize two different polymers which are normally incompatible. These polymer complexes can also be blended with fillers and/or oils when the sulfonated polymer is elastomeric. The materials display thermoplastic character.
