Abstract: A method of allocating resources for communications in a mobile telecommunication system wherein the mobile telecommunication system includes a wireless interface for a base station to communicate with communications devices and wherein a communications device is operable to transmit signals to another communications device using resources of the wireless interface and in accordance with a device-to-device communication protocol. A first pool of the resources is allocated to device-to-device communications of broadcast type and a second pool of the resources is allocated to a device-to-device communications of unicast type, the second pool of resources being separate from the first pool. The method includes a first communications device transmitting broadcast messages using resources of the first resources pool and a second communications device transmitting unicast messages using resources of the second resources pool.

Abstract: A method of operating first and second terminal devices for transmitting data in a device-to-device communication mode in a wireless telecommunications system supporting communications on a first carrier operating over a first frequency band and a second carrier operating over a second frequency band. The first terminal device transmits control signalling on the first carrier and this is received by the second terminal device. The control signalling comprises an indication of that the first terminal device intends to transmit data to the second terminal device using the device-to-device communication mode on the second carrier after a carrier switch-over time. The first terminal device then proceeds to transmit data to the second terminal device on the second carrier using the device-to-device communication mode after the carrier switch-over time. The first and second terminal devices may cease communications on the second carrier after a carrier switch-back time.

Abstract: A communications device to transmit data to a mobile communications network includes one or more network elements providing a wireless access interface for communication. The communications device includes a controller controlling a transmitter to transmit a random access message to a first network element via a random access channel of the wireless access interface common to one or more other communications devices, to receive in response an acknowledgement indicating an allocation of communications resources of a shared up-link channel for the communications device to transmit signals to the mobile communications network, or a negative acknowledgment indicating the communications device has not been allocated communications resources of the shared up-link channel. After detecting random access failure conditions by the controller, the controller in combination with the transmitter re-transmits the random access message one or more times, with a variable delay greater than or equal to a delay of a previous re-transmission.

Abstract: A communications device and method, in which data is communicated via a wireless access interface to a destination communications device with a device-to-device communication procedure. The communications device encodes the data, as data units, for transmission to the destination communications device with a repeat request-type protocol, the encoding providing an indication whether the data has been received correctly. The communications device transmits the encoded data units to the destination communications device, and receives an acknowledgement ACK message that one of the encoded data units has been correctly received by the destination communications device, or a negative acknowledgement NACK message that the encoded data units were not received correctly by the destination communications device. The ACK or NACK message is transmitted by another communications devices of a group of communications devices, acting as a relay communications device, which received and retransmitted the ACK or NACK message from the destination communications device.

Abstract: Schemes for supporting device-to-device, D2D, communications between terminal devices in a wireless telecommunication system. A network entity, e.g. a base station, establishes a set pool of radio resources to be reserved for use for D2D communications and communicates an indication of these resources to terminal devices. On an ongoing basis the network entity monitors the extent to which the set of radio resources reserved for D2D communications is being used, for example based on feedback received from terminal devices or its own measurements. If it is determined the set of radio resources reserved for D2D communications is being under-utilized or over-utilized, the network entity may establish an updated set of radio resources to be used for D2D communications, and communicate this to the terminal devices. Thus a mechanism is provided for dynamically adjusting the size of a set of resources available for D2D communications in response to changing resource utilization.

Abstract: A communications device can identify one or more sections of plural predetermined sections, divided into time-units, of shared communications resources of a wireless access interface for transmitting data signals to one or more other communications device.
