The present invention is directed toward anionic polymerization initiators which are soluble in acyclic alkane solvents. The initiators include a solubilized lithio amine having the general formula (A)Li(SOL).sub.y. SOL is a solubilizing component and A is an alkyl, dialkyl or cycloalkyl amine radical or a cyclic amine and y is from about 1 to 4. The invention is also directed toward polymers and other products made using the initiator, and methods therefore. Further, the invention contemplates a polymer, a polymer composition and products therefrom, which include a functional group from the reaction product of an amine and an organolithium compound. The resulting polymers may be terminated with a terminating, coupling or linking agent, which may provide the polymer with a multifunctionality.

This invention describes chemical modifications of hydrogenated polymers, particularly thermoplastic elastomers, e.g., Kraton.RTM. G, to increase the chemical resistance thereof. The number of residual reactive unsaturated diene-based mid-blocks were reduced through a post-hydrogenation reaction with an alkyl phenyl ether, e.g., anisole. The anisolated thermoplastic elastomer was then further reacted with benzenesulfonylation and nitration reactions to produce even more useful derivatives thereof.

The invention describes a redox initiating system consisting of Cu.sup.II salts, enolizable aldehydes and ketones, and various combinations of coordinating agents for Cu.sup.II, coordinating agents for Cu.sup.I, and a strong amine base that is not oxidized by Cu.sup.II. In particular, Cu.sup.II octanoate/dibenzyl ketone/pyridine/triethylamine/triphenylphosphine systems are effective. In addition to initiating free radical polymerizations and copolymerizations, this initiating system can be applied to the synthesis of functionalized telechelics, polymers with ketone linkages in the backbone, block and graft copolymers consisting of free-radical and step-growth polymer blocks, and crosslinking reactions.

A curable composition which comprises:(a) an anhydride-functional polymer obtained by polymerizing under free radical addition polymerization conditions, a monomer mixture comprising:(i) 20 to 75 weight percent of an alkenyl succinic anhydride having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each independently hydrogen or alkyl or substituted alkyl of 1 to about 30 carbons; and(ii) 25 to 80 weight percent of at least one (meth)acrylic monomer copolymerizable with the alkenyl succinic anhydride; and, optionally,(iii) 0 to 75 weight percent of at least one unsaturated monomer, other than a (meth)acrylic-monomer, which is copolymerizable with the anhydride and the (meth)acrylic monomer; and(b) a compound having an average of at least two functional groups per molecule which are reactive with anhydride groups.
