The optical recording medium has an absorption band for light in the long wavelength region and is superior in stability against heat and light.

The present invention provides an IR-ray absorptive compound having a specific structural formula and an optical recording medium. The IR-ray absorptive compound has excellent characteristics that absorption in the infrared region is large and improved in solvent solubility.In corporation of the IR-ray absorptive compound into a thin film containing an organic coloring matter of an optical recording medium has remarkably improved the storage stability and the light resistance of the medium. Further the high solubility in solvents prevents formation of a solid in the recording layer, whereby the optical recording medium having a low noise level can be obtained.

Described is an optical recording medium comprising at least one of naphtholactam compounds represented by the specific formulas. The optical recording medium has absorption at the long wavelength side, can make a record with high sensitivity even when a long wavelength oscillation laser such as a semiconductor layer is used, and can obtain a high C/N ratio because of the capability of forming pits with good shapes. It is also possible to provide an optical recording medium which can be readily prepared by coating, has good stability to heat, and has superior storage stability with less reproduction deterioration.
