A composite material that is usefull in the manufacture of jewelry components has a precious metal layer laminated to an age hardenable non-precious metal-base alloy support layer. In one embodiment, the precious metal layer is a 10 k, or higher, gold alloy and the support layer is a copper-base spinodal alloy. The composite material is formed by laminating the precious metal layer to the support layer, forming the composite material into a desired shape and then age hardening the jewelry component.

Method of manufacturing an article including a substrate comprising a first material and an inlay comprising a second material includes the steps of preheating the substrate; contacting a depression in a surface of the substrate with the second material; heating the second material at a point contact with the substrate causing it to liquify and flow into the depression; and moving the point of contact along the along the depression in the surface of the substrate while continuously feeding the second material and heating the second material at the point contact with the substrate to cause it to substantially fill the depression. A method of manufacturing a composite article comprising a first material and a metal wire comprising a second material, includes: joining ends of the metal wire or otherwise fabricating or machining to form a seamless megtal ring or other article having an inner diameter greater than an outer diameter of the ring-shaped substrate; placing the metal ring over a groove disposed circumferentially in an outer surface; placing the substrate with the metal ring thereon on a mandrel; positioning the mandrel in a collet in an opening of a collet-block; and forcing the collet with the mandrel positioned therein into the opening; so that the metal ring is squeezed into the groove in the ring-shaped substrate to form the composite article.
