Higher concentrations of oak bark ash extract, i.e., greater than 20% by weight, are useful for the treatment of skin cancers. Lower concentrations of oak bark extract possess additional therapeutic properties not heretofore recognized. For example, preparations containing 40–80% oak bark extract are useful in the treatment of acute cancerous skin ulcers. In addition, synthetic mixtures containing potassium ions, zinc ions, calcium ions provide many of the same advantageous properties of oak bark extract. The inclusion of rubidium ions and sulfur is also advantageous for some applications.

The invention relates to active ingredients capable of stimulating direct or indirect expression of type 2 human beta-defensins and/or type 3 human beta-defensins. The invention thus provides an active ingredient capable of stimulating direct or indirect expression of type 2 human beta-defensins and/or type 3 human beta-defensins, characterized in that said active ingredient does not cause any inflammatory, irritation or intolerance reactions. The invention also provides a screening method for the selection of such active ingredients. The invention is applicable to the preparation of cosmetic or pharmaceutical compositions containing such active ingredients.

A topical composition is disclosed for reducing a urushiol-induced allergic response and the dermatitis associated therewith. The composition is a preparation having an acorn derivative and a nontoxic dermatologically acceptable aqueous dispersion material. The acorn derivative is acorn ash, acorn mash, roasted acorn, or acorn extract and comprises about 0.1 to 50 percent by weight of the treating preparation. After the initial preparation, preservatives are then added. Optionally, additional ingredients such as surfactants and emulsifying agents, antihistamines, topical anesthetics, colloidal oatmeal, topical antipruritics, astringents, and emollients may be added to the aqueous acorn dispersion. With processing varied according the examples provided, the ingredients are combined so as to create sprays, creams, gels, ointments, and lotions.

A composition and method of treatment of hemoglobinopathies, such as, for example, sickle cell disease and thalassemia, wherein an inventive extract used in such treatment is obtained from alfalfa and other certain plant materials, preferably using a hydroxide base and hexane. In the most preferred embodiment, the plant material is first extracted with 1,1,1-trichloroethane and a hydroxide base, followed by extraction with hexane. The polar acidic compounds present in alfalfa and other plant materials selectively dissolve in the hexane phase and exhibit good antisickling activity in vitro. Further, these active compounds which comprise the inventive extract are effective in vivo by significantly alleviating the many clinical manifestations of sickle cell disease and thalassemia experienced by the affected patients.
