An improved magnetic mixer includes an agitator that includes a plurality of agitator magnets. A bearing arrangement allows the agitator to be magnetically levitated along the outer surface of a cylindrical vessel fitting located within a mixing vessel. The same magnetic force that is used to levitate the mixer drives the agitator. The magnetic force is preferably generated by a plurality of magnets which rotate within an aperture extending into the vessel fitting. By magnetically levitating the agitator, there is no thrust generated by the agitator against the vessel fitting which eliminates the need for thrust bearings and reduces the overall frictional forces. The low friction results in reduced particle generation, reduced power consumption and reduced maintenance compared to conventional magnetic mixers.

The present invention utilizes high magnetic flux materials to substantially increase the power which can be transmitted from a magnetic driver, disposed outside of a vessel containing a fluid being processed, to a magnetically responsive agitator means disposed inside the vessel. This invention now enables the agitation, e.g., mixing, blending, etc., of fluids processed in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food processing industries, where relatively high torques are encountered, by non-contaminating magnetic drive means heretofore precluded in such applications. Means for producing vibrational agitation, and for reducing wear of the internal agitator bearing are also disclosed.

When the chemical is completely dissolved by heating the mixture to a temperature above the saturation temperature, the temperature is lowered. At the saturation temperature the temperature is initially reduced slowly to avoid crystal nucleation. The saturation temperature of the initial solution is selected to be at an intermediate temperature which is high enough that the amount of dissolved material is large enough to produce a large crystal or large crystal clusters, yet not so high that the solubility curve has a large slope and therefore requires a high degree of temperature control to avoid crystal nucleation in the solution.
