Abstract:
An apparatus for improving the flow of fluid to be treated in boundary regions of a mass (2) of particulate material. The apparatus has at least one deflecting surface (4), making an angle with the main direction of the flow of fluid passing through the mass, in the boundary region in order to divert the flow of the fluid locally. The apparatus may be used in plants for purifying or separating gas mixtures.
Abstract:
A reactor arrangement and process for indirectly contacting a reactant stream with a heat exchange stream uses an arrangement of corrugated heat exchange plates to control temperature conditions by varying the number and/or the arrangement of the corrugations along the plates. The reactor arrangement and process of this invention may be used to operate a reactor under isothermal or other controlled temperature conditions. The variation in corrugation arrangements within a single heat exchange section is highly useful in maintaining a desired temperature profile in an arrangement having a cross-flow of heat exchange medium relative to reactants. The corrugations arrangement eliminates or minimizes the typical step-wise approach to isothermal conditions.

Abstract:
This invention provides an improved, simple and energy saving process for producing a gas containing methane, which process utilizes a reactor having a catalyst bed of a structure wherein a synthesis gas is allowed to pass perpendicularly to the longitudinal directions of a plurality of cooling tubes installed vertically within the catalyst bed. Within the cooling tubes, a liquid coolant at its boiling temperature is flowed upwardly under pressure. A portion of the reaction product gas leaving the catalyst bed is mixed, without cooling, with fresh feed gas and is recirculated to the catalyst bed. The amount of the recycled gas is less than 5 times the amount of fresh feed gas. The foregoing process produces a product gas containing methane from a feed gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
Abstract:
Apparatus for effecting fluid-solids contacting wherein a bed of stationary or downward moving ferromagnetic particles are contacted within a contacting chamber with a fluid which passes through the bed in a cross-flow manner, said bed being structured or stabilized, by a magnetic field, the improvement which comprises providing louver means attached below at least one of the openings of the contacting chamber, said louver means which extend upward and outward from the openings in the direction of the incoming gaseous fluid and the balance of the louver extending outward and downward toward the incoming gaseous fluid stream. Also disclosed are processes for using the improved louvered magnetically stabilized crossflow contactor including processes for removing particulates from gaseous streams, flue gas desulfurization processes and the like.
