The polymer compositions described herein include the reaction product obtained from a mixture that includes: (i) a hydroxyl terminated intermediate containing at least one furan functional group; and (ii) a polyisocyanate component. The polymer compositions may further include a polymaleimide compound which may be (a) added as a component of the polymer composition, (b) incorporated into the structure of the hydroxyl terminated intermediate containing at least one furan functional group, or (c) both. The resulting polymer composition is capable of thermally reversible crosslinking. Also described are processes for making such polymer compositions, methods of reversibly increasing and/or decreasing the amount of crosslinking in a polymer composition thermally, through utilization of the Diels-Alder cycloaddition mechanism between furan functional groups and the polymaleimide compound, and methods of using the described furan functional group containing materials to prepare polymer compositions capable of thermally reversible crosslinking.

Open-cell structures are filled with polyimide foam formed in place by the use of a foam precursor in powdered form comprised of a combination of (a) the reaction product of an excess of organic polyisocyanate and a member selected from the group consisting of furfuryl alcohol and condensation products thereof, and (b) an organic polycarboxylic compound containing two carboxylic anhydride groups. The precursor is prepared by combining the species under conditions which favor the reaction of the furfuryl alcohol with the polyisocyanate, but not the polyimide-forming reaction. The polyimide-forming reaction itself is then performed by adding preselected amounts of the powdered precursor, depending on the desired ultimate density of the foam, to each cell of the open-cell structure, then heating to initiate the polyimide reaction, and permitting the carbon dioxide generated by the reaction to escape while confining the resulting foam to the cells.

A crosslinkable composition of matter is provided, which comprises certain diene functional aminoepoxy resin and certain functional aminoepoxy blocked dieneophile resin, which two resins are co-reactive at elevated cure temperature. The diene functional aminoepoxy resin comprises the reaction product of diepoxide with amine functional diene chain extending reactant and, optionally, monofunctional end-capping reactant such as monohydroxy functional diene. The blocked dieneophile functional aminoepoxy resin comprises the reaction product of diepoxide with amine functional blocked dieneophile chain extending reactant and, optionally, monofunctional end-capping reactant such as monohydroxy functional blocked dieneophile. The composition may further comprise crosslinking agent reactive with hydroxy functionality of the resins. The crosslinkable composition of matter is useful in coating and other applications, especially solvent based primer coating compositions and cathodic electrocoating compositions.

This invention relates to novel furan polyols, which are characterized in that they are the product of reaction of a strain selected from the group or consisting of a polyalcohol, a monoamine or polyamine, said polyalcohol or said amine possibly containing a furan cycle and mixtures thereof with a chain extension agent constituted by an organic epoxide, with the proviso that this organic epoxide is a furannic oxiran when this polyalcohol does not contain a furan cycle with the exclusion of 2,5(bis-hydroxy)furan as sole strain, when the chain extension agent does not contain any furan cycle. These furan polyols are used for the preparation of polyurethane foams having improved properties.

Improved rigid urethane and isocyanurate foam compositions having improved fire resistance are described. The urethane foams are based on furan compositions having the formula: ##STR1## and from about 100% to about 500% of a stoichiometric amount of a reactive polyisocyanate to produce a foamable composition, and sufficient blowing agent to create a foam having a density from about 1.5 to about 5 pounds per cubic foot. The product has improved fire resistence. The disclosure also described the method of decreasing the flame hazard potential of a rigid foam by adding two urethane or isocyanurate foaming ingredients the appropriate amount of one or more of the compositions listed above. The polymers described are chiefly made from adding propelyne oxide to bis (hydroxymethyl) furan.
