The reactor includes a plurality of staged air orifices that create a vortex in the combustion chamber. Various methods for decreasing the amount of nitrogen oxides released to the atmosphere as a component of combustion gas mixtures are provided. The methods specifically provide for the removal of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide (NOx) from gas mixtures emitted from stationary combustion systems. In particular, methods for improving efficiency of nitrogen oxide reduction from combustion systems include injecting metal-containing compounds into the main combustion zone and/or the reburning zone of a combustion system. The metal containing compounds react with active combustion species, and these reactions change radical concentrations and significantly improve NOx conversion to molecular nitrogen. The metal-containing additives can be injected with the main fuel, in the main combustion zone, with secondary or reburning fuel addition, or at several locations in the main combustion zone and reburning zone. Optionally, nitrogenous reducing agents and/or overfire air can be injected downstream to further increase NOx reduction.

An apparatus and method of operating a fluidized bed reactor for combusting refuse derived fuel is disclosed. The reactor includes a fluidized furnace section 30 and stripper/cooler section 80. A downwardly sloping grid 28 extends across the furnace section 30 and stripper/cooler section 80 to a drain 78 in the stripper/cooler section 80, and directional nozzles 38 disposed in the grid fluidize the beds in the furnace section 30 and stripper/cooler section 80 and forcibly convey relatively large particulate material across the grid 28, through the furnace section 30 and stripper/cooler section 80, and to the drain 78 for disposal. A refractory layer 36 is provided along the grid 28 surface to reduce the height of the nozzles 38 within the furnace section 30, thereby helping to prevent relatively large particulate material from becoming entangled with or stuck to the nozzles 38. The furnace section 30 and stripper/cooler section 80 are designed to provide a relatively straight path for the relatively large particulate material passing from the furnace section 30, to the stripper/cooler section 80, and to the drain 78.

A vertical chamber for waste disposal and heating purposes has an upright combustion chamber with an inlet for waste material, a grating at a lower chamber end and an adjustable burner controlled by a temperature sensor so that the burner operation can be adapted to allow for the calorific value or requirement of the material to be incinerated. A trap door is situated at the lower end for ash removal and is arranged by air passages to permit air to pass upward past the door for combustion and to open periodically for removing ash. The grating may be water cooled and step down towards the trap door to permit ash to be blown off onto the door before the door is opened.

A combustion system includes waste, fuel, and oxidizer conduits which exit into a combustion chamber. The combustion chamber is lined with refractory within a metal housing and includes a shoulder. A venturi extends between the combustion chamber and an oxidizer manifold mounted on one end of the combustion chamber. The waste conduit communicates with a nozzle in the venturi for atomizing the waste in the combustion chamber. The fuel conduit communicates with ports in the venturi whereby as the oxidizer passes through apertures in the venturi, the fuel is introduced into the oxidizer stream. The mixture of oxidizer and fuel is deflected toward the wall of the combustion chamber where the mixture becomes entrained with the atomized waste from the nozzle. The waste mixes with the mixture of oxidizer and fuel by turbulent flow and is redirected by the shoulder towards the nozzle.
