    Abstract: A thallium-containing optical glass composition which comprises the following oxides in the indicated proportions in mole %: SiO.sub.2 35-80, Tl.sub.2 O 1-30, Tl.sub.2 O+R.sub.2 O (R being an alkali metal) 1-35, ZnO 0-35, GeO.sub.2 0-30, BaO 0-25, TiO.sub.2 0-20, MgO 0-20, B.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-less than 10, ZrO.sub.2 0-2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-8, SnO 0-5, CaO 0-10, SrO 0-10, PbO 0-10, La.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-5, Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-8, and Ta.sub.2 O.sub.5 0-2, and satisfies the following relations:5.ltoreq.ZnO+GeO.sub.2 +BaO+TiO.sub.2 +MgO+B.sub.2 O.sub.3 .ltoreq.40,0.1.ltoreq.ZrO.sub.2 +Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 +SnO.ltoreq.8,and0.ltoreq.CaO+SrO+PbO+La.sub.2 O.sub.3 +Bi.sub.2 O.sub.3 +Ta.sub.2 O.sub.5 .ltoreq.10.

    Abstract: Thick film resistive elements are prepared from an intimate admixture comprising silica, lead oxide and ruthenium dioxide or iridium dioxide which is heated to a temperature sufficient to provide a lead-containing glass having dispersed therein lead ruthenate or lead iridate. The lead-containing glass is comminuted and a resistor paste is formed which can be subsequently coated and fired on to a desired substrate to form the thick film resistive component. The method of this invention may facilitate the production of thick film resistors exhibiting a low temperature coefficient of resistivity, relative freedom from noise and drift, and high moisture resistance.

    Abstract: A novel Faraday-effect element having a refractive index highest along the axis and decreasing toward the surface is produced by immersing a thin elongated glass body containing an oxide selected from the group consisting of paramagnetic- and diamagnetic-type oxides composed of at least first cations, in a bath of salt including second cations having a smaller ration of the electronic polarizability to the third power of the ion radius than said first cations. The bath is maintained at a temperature to permit said second cations to diffuse into said glass body so that said first cations may be substituted by said second cations.
