A process for the preparation of a supported catalyst containing a catalytically active metal such as a noble metal is disclosed wherein the supported catalyst is prepared by initially contacting the inert support with a base and disposing an amount of base in the support corresponding to 0.01 to 50 gram equivalents of base per gram equivalent of catalytically active metal to be deposited thereon, drying the so-treated support to a residual moisture content of less than 10 percent of the maximum absorbency of the support and thereafter impregnating the same with a salt solution of a catalytically active metal, e.g., a salt of a catalytically active noble metal. The inert support is one having a BET surface area of less than 20 square meters per gram. The catalyst is useful in hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, oxidation, polymerization, isomerization or cyclization reactions.

An improved method for selectively hydrogenating an alkylphenol to produce the corresponding cis-alkylcyclohexanol by employing a solid catalyst is disclosed. The catalyst useful in this method is a ruthenium catalyst supported on an alumina carrier. This catalyst exhibits excellent reactivity, selectivity and durability in the catalytic hydrogenation compared to conventional rhodium or ruthenium catalysts, such as ruthenium oxide and ruthenium catalysts supported on carbon. The alkylcyclohexanol product contains so much cis-isomer that it is suitable as such for use as an intermediate for the synthesis of varous chemicals, such as perfumes.

Alkylated aromatic products are produced in a process comprising the steps of pyrolysing a pyrolysable raw material in a pyrolysis process to obtain a pyrolysis product stream containing a phenolic product and aromatics products; separating the pyrolysis product stream into a first product stream containing phenolic products and a second product stream containing aromatics products; subjecting the first product stream to a hydrogenation reaction to hydrogenate the phenolic product to obtain an aliphatic alcohol; then reacting the aliphatic alcohol with the aromatics products in the presence of a transalkylation catalyst comprising a solid acid catalyst to form an alkylated aromatic product. The alkylated aromatic product may be subjected to further treatment such as hydroprocessing. The alkylated aromatics product may be used in the production of fuels from biomass.
