摘要: The present invention relates to a tubular reactor (14) for multi-phase polymerization, in particular for producing butyl rubber, comprising a pipe piece (16) for radially delimiting a reactor volume between an inlet (18) and an outlet (20), a stirrer (22) for generating a flow (27) in the radial direction of the pipe piece (16), wherein the stirrer (22) is dimensioned and operable such that the flow (27) is impartable with a centrifugal force which generates a concentration distribution in the radial direction inside the pipe piece (16) and an outlet conduit (32) for discharging a concentrated radially inner part (30) of the flow (27, 28). Enrichment of polymer particles in the radially inner part (30) of the flow (27, 28) avoids gumming of the pipe piece (16) by the polymer particles so that the risk of a blockage is reduced.

摘要: In one or more embodiments, the present invention provides a method for forming allyl telechelic polyisobutylene polymers having well defined molecular weights and molecular weight distributions using living cationic polymerization under ideal temperature control using a mixture of polar and nonpolar refluxing solvents. The methods according to various embodiments of the present invention provide temperature control that approaches the ideal, i.e., the heat of polymerization is instantaneously absorbed by the medium and the temperature of the system remains unchanged. The heat generated during the exothermic polymerization of isobutylene is released as an increase in the rate of reflux, rather than the temperature, since the temperature is set by the boiling point of the system and does not change.

摘要: A process for production of polyisobutylene includes subjecting a reaction admixture comprising isobutylene, a diluent for the isobutylene, which may be isobutane, and a catalyst composition, that may include a BF3/methanol catalyst complex, to reaction conditions suitable for causing at least a portion of the isobutylene to undergo polymerization to form a polyisobutylene product including polyisobutylene molecules. At least a fraction of the polyisobutylene molecules thus produced have alpha position double bonds and the polyisobutylene product has a number average molecular weight (MN) and a polydispersity index (PDI). The concentration of the diluent in the reaction admixture may be manipulated to control or change any one or more of (a) the relative size of the fraction, (b) the number average molecular weight of the product, (c) the polydispersity index of the product and (d) the relative size of the portion. The diluent concentration may be held constant to maintain any one or more of such characteristics constant.

摘要: Sulfur containing, hydroxyl-telechelic PIBs, hydrolytically and oxidatively resistant, biocompatible and biostable polyurethanes (PUs) made therefrom, and methods for making both are disclosed. Well-defined hydroxyl telechelic PIBs are synthesized by a thiol-ene click photochemical reaction between PIBs carrying unsaturated end groups and 2-mercaptoethanol (HS—CH2CH2—OH). This regioselective process affords HO—CH2CH2—S-PIB-S—CH2CH2—OH (abbreviated herein as HO—S-PIB-S—OH) in high yield. In some embodiments, these HO—S-PIB-S—OH polymers may be reacted with diisocyanates and a chain extender to form sulfur containing PIB-based PUs. These sulfur containing PIB-based PUs have been found to have properties and chemical stability that are very similar to that of PUs made from di-hydroxyl terminated PIBs (OH-PIB-OHs) without sulfur, but have surprisingly increased creep resistance and are easier and less expensive to make.

摘要: A polyisobutylene having a total content of vinylidene double bonds of more than 50 mol % and a number-average molecular weight of 500 to 10 000 daltons, where at least 10% of all the vinylidene double bonds in the polyisobutylene are part of one or more side chains composed of at least 2 carbon atoms from the main polyisobutylene chain. Such a polyisobutylene is suitable for production of fuel and lubricant additives.
