Abstract:
In a rotary drum for thickening pulp, the rotary drum may include drainage channels for delivering filtrate from a pulp mat on the rotary drum to a filtrate chamber at an end of the rotary drum, and includes a flat face valve and plenum chamber assembly in the filtrate chamber. The flat face valve can be juxtaposed against drainage outlets of the drainage channels, wherein the flat face valve does not block the drainage outlets during a majority of the rotation of the rotary drum. An opening on the flat face valve may extend through the front surface and be aligned with the drainage outlets to provide a fluid passage through the flat face valve and to a plenum chamber behind the flat face valve such that air in the filtrate is collected in the upper portion of the plenum chamber and removed from the rotary drum.
Abstract:
A method to treat biomass, e.g., lignocellulosic material, including: performing a pretreatment step on the biomass and discharging the pretreated biomass; in at least a first enzymatic hydrolysis reactor producing a liquefaction material, recirculating at least a portion of the liquefaction material from the at least first reactor to a location upstream of the addition of the enzymes as at least a portion of the coolant for the hot pretreated biomass.
Abstract:
A brush for dislodging impurities on steam relief screen basket within an operating vessel including at least one brush that includes an elongated support column with a brush attached to a first end of the elongated support column extends out of a seal located on a removable vessel cover of the vessel. The steps using the brush to dislodge impurities on steam relief screen basket include locating the brush comprised of a plurality of bristles adjacent to the steam relief screen basket, contacting the brush with the screen basket, extending the elongated support column through the seal, closing the removable vessel cover of the vessel to avoid pressure drop inside the vessel, and moving the brush from a first location on the screen basket to a second location on the screen basket to dislodge impurities attached to the screen basket.
Abstract:
This disclosure describes a level indicator assembly for measuring the level of solids in a vessel. The level indicator may desirably comprise a solid shaft extending into a vessel. The shaft may have paddle connected to an interior end of the shaft and an external sensor attached to an exterior end of the shaft. A support structure may engage the sensor to prevent at least a portion of the sensor from moving. By keeping a portion of the sensor stationary, the sensor may measure the change in torsional force exerted on the shaft. By locating the sensor external to the vessel, operators may remove and replace sensors without accessing either the vessel interior or the portions of the level indicator assembly that extend into the vessel.
Abstract:
A rotor cap assembly has been conceived using multiple wedge-shaped rotor cap segments, in which the cap segments are disposed on a cap segment retainer and in which the cap segment retainer pilots the multiple rotor cap segments at a diameter intermediate the cap segments' outer diameter and the cap segments' middle diameter. By piloting multiple rotor cap segments with retaining means on the cap segment retainer and positioning means on the multiple cap segments, the rotor cap segments and cap segment retainer assembly may be fixed to a plate holder or directly to a rotor disc of a refiner without substantially altering either the plate holder or the rotor disc.
Abstract:
A flash tank including: a closed interior chamber; a gas exhaust port coupled to an upper portion of the chamber; a liquid discharge port coupled to a lower portion of the chamber; an inlet nozzle attached to an inlet port of the chamber, wherein the inlet nozzle includes a flow passage, and a movable valve plate in the flow passage, wherein the valve plate has a first position which defines a first throat in the flow passage and a second position which defines a second throat having a smaller cross-sectional area than the first throat.

Abstract:
To address the problem of flush fluid leakage under normal operating conditions in rotary machinery, an improved pack-box has been conceived. The pack-box has a rotary bearing concentrically disposed within the pack-box, wherein a circumferential segment of the rotary bearing is circumferentially fixed within the pack-box. The pack-box further comprises a wall-step that defines at least a first thermal expansion channel and an inner wall that defines at least a second thermal expansion channel.
Abstract:
An in-line drainer or liquid separator for draining liquid from a moving black liquor slurry stream having a screen basket mounted in the internal chamber of the in-line drainer. The screen basket includes slots to retain solid particles of the moving black liquor slurry stream within the black liquor slurry stream flow chamber and block the solid particles from entering the liquid collection chamber. The slots each have a curved corner edge adjacent a surface screen basket facing the black liquor slurry stream flow chamber.
