Abstract: Composite reinforcements (100, 100A, 100B, 100C) are formed by combining a first plurality of continuous fibers (102) with a second plurality of continuous fibers (106) with the first and second pluralities of continuous fibers (102, 106) being impregnated with at least one appropriate resin material (R1, R2, R3) and pultruded to form the reinforcements. The first and second pluralities of continuous fibers (102, 106) can be intermixed with one another or combined as a central core (104, 132) of the first fibers with a jacket (108, 108A, 108B, 134) formed by the second fibers. In either event, the combined fibers are formed as an elongated rod (110) and rigidified using the resin material. The first fibers are glass, either E-glass or S-2 glass, with the second fibers being either carbon, aramid, S-2 glass or AR-glass. The composite reinforcements of the present application, formed by combining these materials, have characteristics very similar to steel under tensile loading but with superior corrosion resistance and less detrimental deterioration characteristics.

Abstract: A suture comprising a core of at least one synthetic fiber filament yarns, and a covering layer formed of a plurality of silk strands and sheathing the core, the core and the covering layer having substantially the same elongation at break. The filament yarns have increased modulus of elasticity and increased breaking strength to thereby give the suture improved breaking strength and also have enhanced rigidity to render the suture highly amenable to the correction of its deformation and easier to handle.

Abstract: In making synthetic rope or cable, a plurality of filaments are brought in parallelism into a core and compacted by a plurality of ribbons or tapes wound about the core under tension in opposite directions to form a uniform jacket that is torsionally stable. An outer sheath which may be urethane or other plastic material is applied to the jacket under sufficient pressure to penetrate the jacket but not the core, and then the urethane is cured. The rope or cable of the invention has a core of substantially parallel filaments free to move within the jacket of ribbons wound about the core and penetrated with the urethane or other plastic material. The method affords many advantages in speed of manufacture and cost, and provides a rope or cable of greater tensile strength and flexibility than other rope or cable constructions.

Abstract: An elongated article such as a rope or cord having a series of fairings spaced apart along its length is produced in a continuous manner by the method and apparatus of the present invention. The rope comprises a core having a plurality of yarns surrounded by a layer of resilient material, and a braided jacket surrounds the core and anchors the fairings thereto. The fairings are provided by a resilient fairing yarn which is fed toward the core and which is manipulated by a needle during braiding of the jacket to cause each fairing to have a base portion anchored between the jacket and the resilient layer of the core and streamer portions extending outwardly from the base portion. The needle is mounted for reciprocation parallel to the moving core upstream of the braider, and the fairing yarn passes through the eye of the needle and a first length is displaced through the path of movement of the braid yarns into engagement with a gripping assembly located downstream of the braid yarns. The gripping assembly holds the first length of fairing yarn so that as the needle retracts, another length of braid yarn is pulled through the needle-eye. Continued operation of the braider causes the jacket to be applied around the portion of the fairing yarn engaged with the core, thereby forming the base portion for the next fairing. A control system is disclosed for synchronizing movement of the needle with the displacement of the rope and for adjusting of the spacing between the fairings. In another embodiment, a method and apparatus is disclosed for producing a faired article which does not have a separately-formed core.
