Abstract:
The subject invention detects the presence of an ozone reducing coating on an automotive radiator of the type having spaced fins presenting electromagnetic surface properties different than the electromagnetic surface properties of the coating. In accordance with the subject invention light rays are emitted or reflected off the coating on the fins to a detector and a comparator compares these light rays to a predetermined benchmark to provide a signal in response to the detected light rays crossing the benchmark. In a species, a second detector is employed to detect rays from an un-coated section to establish the benchmark.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method, a computer usable medium including a program, and a system for monitoring inflation in a plurality of vehicle tires. The method and computer usable medium include the steps of determining a direct pressure in at least one primary tire and determining a rolling radius for the primary tire and at least one secondary tire. A pressure difference is determined based on the determined rolling radius for the primary and secondary tires. The determined pressure difference is adjusted based on the determined direct pressure of the primary tire. The determined pressure difference is compared to at least one threshold value. The system includes means for achieving the method steps of the invention.
Abstract:
A powertrain mount comprises an orifice plate including two tracks, a control track and an isolation track. The control track is spirally formed within the orifice plate, which has an exit and entrance on either side of the plate. The control track provides damping to control damping from engine bounce; whereas, the isolation track controllably provides dynamic rate dip. The isolation track is formed between an alignment plate and rotatable track member, each having an exit and entrance, respectively. The rotatable track member and the alignment plate are sealingly engaged and affixed to a decoupler and an annular area disposed about the orifice plate of the powertrain mount. The exit of the alignment plate is adjacent the decoupler. The rotatable track member forms a cavity with the molded body of the powertrain mount, with the entrance exposed to fluid within the cavity for controlling and minimizing vibrations within the powertrain. The isolation track has a track length that may be varied by rotation of the track member and its entrance. Various magnitudes of disturbance frequencies may be managed and controlled by either the fixed control track and/or the variable isolation track within the powertrain mount.
Abstract:
A ferromagnetic brake rotor having an integral tone ring is provided. A sensor is positioned adjacent to the rotor for sensing magnetic property variations in the ferromagnetic brake rotor. Magnetic property variations in a ferromagnetic brake rotor disc are sensed. Rotational properties for a wheel attached to the ferromagnetic brake rotor disc are determined based on the magnetic property variations. A brake system is then modulated based on to the rotational properties the wheel.
Abstract:
A powertrain mount comprises an orifice plate and a rotatable track member. The orifice plate has an opening, a first surface sloping toward the opening, and an inner surface. The rotatable track member has an outer surface proximate the first surface of the orifice plate, and the outer surface of the rotatable track member has an opening. A compliant member is positioned adjacent the orifice track for isolating and damping amplitudes of vibration frequencies, as an amplitude dependent device. For small amplitudes, the compliant member takes up displaced fluid within the mount; whereas, large amplitudes the compliant member is bottomed out, forcing displaced fluid through the orifice track or into the molded assembly of the mount.
Abstract:
A magnetorheological fluid formulation comprising magnetizable particles dispersed in a non-aqueous, glycol-based liquid vehicle thickened effectively by either a fully treated fumed silica or an organoclay. The surface treated fumed silica is fully treated with a treatment molecule having a molecular weight of at least about 200. The organoclay comprises sepiolite and/or palygorskite. The glycol-based fluid advantageously consists essentially of propylene glycol and optionally ethylene glycol.
Abstract:
The invention provides a magnetorheological piston and damper assembly. The piston includes a piston body including at least one bypass port and an annular gap formed therein. The bypass port is in fluid communication with the annular gap. The bypass port includes a longitudinal portion extending substantially parallel to a piston longitudinal axis, and a bend portion extending substantially away from the longitudinal axis. The annular gap is spaced apart from the longitudinal portion and extends substantially parallel to the piston longitudinal axis. During operation, fluid flows through the bypass port and annular gap. The damper assembly includes a rod and a housing including the fluid carried therein. The piston is slidably carried in the housing and operably attached to the rod.

Pressure in a brake master cylinder is sensed. An optical transducer is affixed to a master cylinder housing. A pressure signal is generated by the optical transducer in response to hydraulic pressure in the master cylinder. A vehicle including a system for sensing pressure in a master cylinder is provided. A brake master cylinder having an access point machined into the master cylinder housing to access a hydraulic chamber is provided. An optical pressure transducer is also provided. A transducer mount assembly affixing the transducer to the master cylinder at the access point and a controller operably coupled to the optical pressure transducer are provided.
Abstract:
A vehicle chassis is a shaped metal sheet chassis body or member with regions of relatively low torsional rigidity, and regions of relatively higher torsional rigidity. At least some of the low torsional rigidity regions are reinforced with a composite overlay comprising directionally oriented long fibers of carbon or the like which may be woven into a mat of directionally oriented fibers and embedded in a matrix of resin or the like. The overlay increases the regions of the chassis to which is applied without significantly increasing the weight of the chassis.
Abstract:
A steering lock mechanism having an actuator communicating with a lock bolt is provided allowing for more space in the vicinity where a steering wheel is supported by an upper steering shaft. Additionally, a bolt engaging device is supported adjacent a lower end of the upper steering shaft in a position to engage a lock bolt such that any torque forces transmitted through the bolt engaging device will not cause damage to either the device or other components of the steering column. The actuator is rotated about an axis from a first position to a second position to cause the lock bolt communicating with the actuator to advance towards the lower end of the upper steering shaft from a locked position to an unlocked position, respectively.
