Disclosed herein too is a method including forming a first layer of a polymeric material on at least one surface of a substrate; texturing the first layer to form a textured first layer; and forming a first type of growing cells on the textured first layer, wherein an average length of features that form the textured first layer is operative to facilitate cell growth, cell orientation, cell morphology and cell differentiation.

Abstract: Various examples of methods, systems, and apparatus are provided for monitoring using an improved mouth guard apparatus. In one example, a battery-free diagnostic mouth guard includes a biting force-voltage transducer comprising a piezoelectric film; a compact resonance tank comprising a wireless sensor; and a transmitting antenna for transmitting sensing data. A piezo-voltage from the biting force-voltage transducer can bias a varactor diode loaded on the wireless sensor whose response frequency is tuned due to a capacitance change of the varactor diode. In some implementations, an external processing equipment can wirelessly detect a frequency shift of the varactor diode integrated resonator. In another example, a method includes detecting a biting force via a biting force-voltage transducer; biasing a varactor diode with a voltage from the transducer; tuning a response frequency of a split ring resonator using a capacitance change of the varactor diode; and emitting sensing data at the response frequency.

Abstract: The subject invention pertains to agonist peptides of type I interferons and methods of using the peptides. These peptides are based on the amino acid sequence of the C-terminus region of the type I IFN molecules and are capable of binding to the cytoplasmic domain of type I IFN receptors. Surprisingly, these peptides were found to possess the same or similar biological activity as that associated with the full-length, mature type I IFN proteins, even though these peptides do not bind to the extracellular domain of the type I IFN receptors. In one embodiment, the peptide is a peptide of IFNα. In another embodiment, the peptide is a peptide of IFNβ. Exemplified peptides of the invention include those having SEQ ID NO:1, SEQ ID NO:2, SEQ ID NO:3, SEQ ID NO:4, SEQ ID NO:5, SEQ ID NO:6, SEQ ID NO:38, SEQ ID NO:39, and SEQ ID NO:40. The subject peptides have been shown to effect increased resistance to viral infection. Peptides of the invention can be used to treat or prevent viral infections, to treat oncological disorders, and to treat autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.

Abstract: Embodiments provide an integrated miniature polarimeter and spectrograph (IMPS) and associated methods for using an IMPS to determine Stokes parameters to describe a source beam. In one embodiment an IMPs is provided comprising a spectropolarimeter module. The spectropolarimeter module comprises a miniature optical bench; a slit component; a birefringent wedge; a dichroic prism; a spectral disperser; and a focal plane array. The slit component, birefringent wedge, dichroic prism, spectral disperser, and focal plane array are mounted to the miniature optical bench such that a beam incident on the slit component will be incident on (1) the birefringent wedge, (2) the dichroic prism, (3) the spectral disperser, and (4) the focal plane array, in that order.

In particular, an intraocular implant which implanted between an intraocular lens and the surface of the posterior capsule of the eye inhibits growth or migration of residual lens epithelial cells after cataract surgery by providing structural barriers to reduce posterior capsule opacification of the eye.
