Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method comprising transporting a conduit and a template through a guide tube; the template being disposed on an outer surface of the conduit between the conduit and the guide tube; and transferring a texture from the template to the conduit as the conduit and the template are transported through the guide tube. Disclosed herein too is an apparatus comprising a guide tube; the guide tube being operative to facilitate a transfer of a pattern from a template to a conduit; a first feed spool and a first take-up spool for feeding the conduit through the guide tube and for taking up the conduit after it has travelled through the guide tube respectively; and a second feed spool and a second take-up spool for feeding the template through the guide tube and for taking up the template after it has travelled through the guide tube respectively.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method comprising growing a shim by disposing a mandrel having an optional textured surface in an electrolytic bath, where the shim contains a negative image of the optional textured surface formed by electrolytic deposition of a metal; affixing the shim working-side down on a reference plane using a fixture; optically scanning the shim to reverse engineer a geometry of a non-working surface, where reverse engineering a geometry of the non-working surface includes developing a profile of the non-working surface and the thickness of the shim; and adding a material to the non-working surface of the shim via additive manufacturing to form a tool insert.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a multilayered article comprising a first layer having a surface texture on a first surface; and a second layer contacting the surface texture on the first layer; where the surface texture comprises a plurality of identical patterns; each pattern being defined by a plurality of spaced apart features attached to or projected into the first surface, at least one spaced apart feature having a dimension of about 1 nanometer to about 1 millimeter, the plurality of features each having at least one neighboring feature having a substantially different geometry, wherein each pattern has at least one feature which is identical to a feature of a neighboring pattern and shares that feature with the neighboring pattern, wherein an average spacing between adjacent spaced apart features is about 1 nanometer to about 1 millimeter in at least a portion of the first surface, wherein the plurality of spaced apart features are represented by a periodic function.

Abstract: An article has a surface topography for resisting bioadhesion of organisms and includes a base article having a surface. A composition of the surface includes a polymer. The surface has a topography comprising a pattern defined by a plurality of spaced apart features attached to or projected into the base article. The plurality of features each have at least one microscale dimension and at least one neighboring feature having a substantially different geometry, wherein neighboring patterns share a common feature. The surface has an optical transmission at 400 nm to 700 nm of equal to or greater than 70%. In one embodiment, the surface can comprise a coating layer disposed on the base article.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a die assembly comprising a first attachment block having a passage, an inlet port and an exit port; where the passage is operative to transport a molten material from the inlet port to the outlet port; a die; and a conduit; where the conduit comprises a passage that is operative to transport the molten material from the first attachment block to an entry port of the die; where the die comprises a first outer tube; and an extrusion pin that comprises a post and fins; where the extrusion pin is located in the first outer tube using the fins and where the post extends from the fins in a direction away from the entry port of the die; and where the post comprises one or more passages; where at least of these passages open to the atmosphere to provide for pressure equalization; and a travelling template; the template being operative to contact an extrudate that emanates from the die and to transfer a texture to a surface of the extrudate by virtue of pressure applied by a guide tube to the extrudate via the travelling template.
