In an aspect of the disclosure, a method, a computer-readable medium, and an apparatus are provided. The apparatus may be a first device. The first device determines a transmission link condition for transmitting at least one frame to a second device, the transmission link condition affecting interference received by the second device from a hidden node when the second device is receiving the at least one frame. The first device also determines whether the transmission link condition satisfies a predetermined criterion. The first device further enables a hidden node protection procedure when the transmission link condition satisfy the predetermined criterion, the hidden node protection procedure reserving a medium used for transmitting the at least one frame to protect reception at the second device from the interference caused by the hidden node. The first device yet further transmits the at least one frame to the second device.

In this manner, issues can be avoided where data carried by the last symbol of a frame cannot be entirely decoded by a receiver within a deadline for generating an immediate response. One example method for wireless communications by a first apparatus generally includes determining at least one constraint for communicating with a second apparatus; generating a frame that solicits a response; and outputting the frame for transmission to the second apparatus, wherein at least a last symbol of the frame is transmitted in a manner determined by the constraint to allow the second apparatus to transmit the response within a determined period.

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide an apparatus for wireless communications. The apparatus generally includes a first interface configured to obtain a first frame having a PHY header and a MAC payload and a processing system configured to determine, based on an indication provided in the PHY header of the first frame, that a response frame to the first frame is to be sent within a time period. This may enable the apparatus to start generating and transmitting an immediate response before decoding the MAC payload.

The apparatus generally includes a processing system configured to generate a plurality of bitmaps that indicate one or more services known by the apparatus, each bitmap being generated by applying a different set of one or more cyclic redundancy check (CRC) based hash functions to one or more service identifications (IDs) of each service, and to generate one or more frames, each frame including one of the plurality of bitmaps and an indication of the set of one or more CRC based hash functions used to generate the bitmap included in the frame, and an interface configured to output the one or more frames for transmission.

In one aspect, a first station discovers a second station capable of providing a service of interest to the first station. The second station is one of a plurality of stations participating in a NAN data link network that provides the service of interest and supports communication over a NAN data link channel without beaconing. The second station is discovered through communication over a NAN channel supported by a plurality of neighborhood stations forming a NAN network. The NAN channel has a beaconing operation that provides synchronization. After discovery of the second station, the first station communicates with the second station over the NAN data link channel, to obtain data corresponding to the service of interest.
