Abstract:
A system for purchasing a personal recording media includes a first station for converting at least one data composition and a data information corresponding thereto to predetermined signals and for transmitting the signals, and a receiving device for receiving the signals and for enabling a user to sense the data composition transmitted The data information corresponding to the data composition being transmitted is selectively stored, by a predetermined operation by a user, either into a storage device of a card-type storage medium when the card-type storage medium is attached to the receiving device or into a storage device in a second station including the receiving device. A desired musical composition can be recorded into a recording medium, either at the second station or at a third station, based upon the data information stored in the card-type storage medium or in the storage device of the second station, and accounting and royalty processes are implemented.
Abstract:
A system, method and computer program product are disclosed for receiving data from a satellite radio network in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a datagram broadcast via a satellite radio network is received utilizing a receiver. The datagram includes broadcast identifier information that identifies a segment of receivers in the satellite radio network to which the datagram is directed. Utilizing the broadcast identifier information, a determination is made as to whether the recipient receiver is a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed. If the recipient receiver is determined to be a member of the identified segment of receivers to which the datagram is directed, then the datagram is processed.
Abstract:
A receiver is provided for an information system that provides selected information to individual users. A high speed digital program signal is broadcast and contains program data that begins at a reference time and is repeated at set intervals. An index signal that contains the receiver's identifier associated with the reference time and interval information is also broadcast. The receiver monitors the index signal for its identifier. When the receiver detects its identifier, the receiver downloads the time and tuning information to receive, download, and store the user's selected program. In some embodiments a transceiver replaces the receiver to allow the user to make remote program requests.
Abstract:
A computer system that hosts a cable modem is described. The cable modem may be used to send and receive messages over the Internet using a cable network managed by a cable operator. Unlike external modems, the cable modem uses the same CPU and memory that are used by the computer system's operating system. However, the cable modem has a different network address than the computer system. When the cable modem receives a data packet having the network address of the cable modem, a cable modem driver forwards the packet to a protocol stack for the cable modem. When the cable modem receives a data packet having the network address of the computer system, the packet is forwarded to a different protocol stack for the computer system. Since the protocol stacks of the cable modem and computer system are different, direct communication from the computer system to the cable modem is not permitted.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for addressing terminals for receiving television programs that are subject to charges, whereby the terminals are divided into groups each having a group address, and an identifier within the group is assigned to each of the terminals of each group. According to the invention, said identifier is a binary vector. The group address and a data item are sent in order to address terminals of group. The data item is formed by logically linking the binary vectors with another binary vector that describes which of the terminals of the group should be addressed. The linking is preferably carried out by forming a binary matrix consisting of the binary vectors and by multiplying the binary matrix with the other vector.
Abstract:
A system and method of individualizing a general broadcast by combining a user identifier with a message and encoding the combination with a user specific code. Also, source identifiers can be added to the encoded combination, and the result again encoded and broadcast via a general broadcast system.
Abstract:
The present invention teaches methods and systems for providing a cable modem termination system (CMTS) for enabling a data-on-demand (DOD) digital broadcast system to provide digital DOD services via a communications medium over one or more channels, the cable modem termination system comprising: a communications network interface for receiving at least one DOD service from the DOD digital broadcast system, wherein the DOD service is formatted as a stream of data blocks arranged in a schedule such that a first data block of the DOD service may be accessed at any selected time period; a unidirectional network interface for providing the stream of data blocks to a plurality of users, wherein the users may access the first data block at any time period and may access subsequent data blocks of the stream of data blocks thereby accessing the at least one DOD service.
Abstract:
A system is provided for dispatching one or more packets of information selected from the group consisting of redeemable coupons, messages, appointment reminders, confirmations, tickets, warnings and written packets to potential recipients at a remote location. The system utilizes a remote receiver and printer having a unique identification number and bit-string code based on predetermined characteristics of the subscriber. The steps included in the system include: (1) developing a subscriber directory containing unique identification information for each of the potential recipients; (2) creating a packet to be dispatched to at least one of the recipients; (3) identifying the potential recipients for a particular packet by identification number or bit-string code; (4) transmitting the packet through a pager network to all of the potential recipients; and (5) receiving and selectively processing and printing only those packets intended to be processed and printed by the appliance.
Abstract:
A system provides service information through a restricted broadcasting using an FM teletext multiplex broadcasting. When providing a reception authorization code that enables each receiver terminal to receive the service information, terminal unique information such as a production number is stored in a user file at the provider's end, such as an FM broadcast station. Further, a processing circuit encodes reception authorization information showing an expiration date of a reception authorization period or contract contents after appending an error detection sign using the terminal unique information, which is notified to the user via mail of the like. Upon input of the notified reception authorization code through an input device, a processing circuit at the receiver terminal's end decodes the reception authorization code using the terminal unique information stored in its memory and corrects an error. Then the processing circuit makes the restricted broadcasting available only when the decoded reception authorization information shows reception authorization and no error is detected therein, so that the decoded teletext information is displayed on a display service.
Abstract:
A novel network manager for use with a cable television system headend capable of monitoring and managing headend components and set top terminals in a television delivery system is described. The invention relates to methods and apparatus that manage and coordinate the reception of various programming and control signals at a headend. The invention manages and coordinates the storage of such signals for intelligent selection and distribution to set top terminals. The invention makes use of a receiver or set of receivers, a work station, a program control information processing component, a network management CPU, databases, control software and an instruction memory. The invention uses these components to manage and monitor certain headend components, such as signal reception equipment, an authorization component, a file server, MPEG decoders, a digital buffer with frame repeat and channel modulators. The invention is particularly useful in processing and responding to upstream information and subscriber communications received from set top terminals. In so doing, the invention accommodates various system services, including (1) near video on demand (NVOD), (2) virtual video on demand (VVOD), (3) video on demand (VOD), (4) interactive program services, (5) program suggestion features, (6) advertisement targeting, (7) generation of standard and custom menus, and (8) data spooling and text overlaying.
