Abstract:
HIV protease inhibitors inhibit or block the biological activity of the HIV protease enzyme, causing the replication of the HIV virus to terminate. These compounds can be prepared by the novel methods of the present invention using the novel inventive intermediates.
Abstract:
Processes for recovering 4,4'-dimethyl bibenzoate (DMBB) from byproduct streams of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) production are disclosed. The byproduct streams are treated to produce an overhead stream which includes DMBB. In one aspect of the invention, the overhead product stream is added to an organic solvent under conditions sufficient to rapidly form a suspension of crystallized DMBB. In another aspect of the invention, the overhead is dissolved in an appropriate organic solvent and cooled to form a suspension of DMBB crystals in the solvent. A portion of the suspension is removed, and the remaining portion of the suspension centrifuged to recover DMBB crystals. In still another aspect of the invention, the overhead stream is treated with an organic solvent to form a slurry of DMBB crystals, and the resultant slurry thermally treated to increase the concentration of DMBB crystals therein while also solubilizing any organic contaminants.
Abstract:
A storage system (10) is disclosed that provides random access storage/retrieval of data on data cartridges within the storage system (10). In one embodiment, the storage system (10) includes a storage array (20), a player/recorder device (22), a guard device (80) and a cartridge transport device (40). The player/recorder device (22) and the transport device (40 ) are positioned on substantially opposite sides of the storage array. The transport device (40) moves cartridges between the storage array (20) and the player/recorder device (22). The guard device (80) pushes a prolapsed data cartridge back into the storage array (20) and/or limits the distance a data cartridge will prolapse from the storage array (20).
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method and apparatus for reducing the flow of repetitive broadcast datagrams over a communication link between two local area networks while still maintaining reception of all of the repetitive broadcast datagrams generated and intended by one of the local area networks for transmission to the other local area network over the communication link. The reduction, which can be to zero, occurs for intermittent periods of time having various durations.
Abstract:
A mobile, hydraulic-powered device for compacting the contents of containers, preferably 55 gallon drums. The compactor comprises a haulable frame having a pair of wheels, a compaction housing, two hydraulic cylinders, a hydraulic pump for operating the cylinders, a motor for operating the pump, and a complete system of operational control valves. The first hydraulic cylinder is mounted on top of the compaction housing and operates to drive a compaction plate down into a container positioned within the housing. The second hydraulic cylinder is pivotally mounted to the frame and is used to move the compaction housing between an operating position on the ground behind the frame and a transporting position up over the frame. Also, the compactor minimizes excess movement and the release of container liquids during compacting operation, which can apply a force of up to 1000 psi.
Abstract:
A process for converting 1,4-butanediol to tetrahydrofuran using polybenzimidazole to catalyze the reaction. The conversion is accomplished by heating the 1,4-butanediol in the presence of the PBI. The THF product may be distilled from the reaction solution as an azeotrope with water. To function as the catalyst, the PBI must first be pre-treated with a strong aqueous acid such as sulfuric acid. The catalyst may be in the form of microporous resin beads, hollow fibers, or other forms of PBI. This process exhibits a high selectivity for producing THF without side reactions.
Abstract:
A seris of antibody-vinca drug conjugates comprise antibodies which target antigens associated with undesirable cells, so that the cells are controlled or killed by the cytotoxic vinca drug. The drug is linked to the antibody through an organic group comprising a carbonyl at the antibody end, and an alkylidene hydrazide at the vinca end.
Abstract:
Sintered polybenzimidazole articles are obtained by compacting a particulate, dried polybenzimidazole resin under a pressure of 2,000 to 10,000 psi in a mold, heating the formed article to a temperature in the range of 825.degree. to 950.degree. F. for at least four hours, cooling the polybenzimidazole article to below 800.degree. F. while maintaining the article under a pressure of 2,000 to 10,000 psi, and thereafter heating the constrained formed polybenzimidazole article to a temperature in the range of 825.degree. to 950.degree. F. for at least one hour.
