The present disclosure is related to a method of fabricating a stacked nanographene structure which is assembled into quantum wires or ribbons. While it has been demonstrated that nanowires can be fabricated from various raw carbon materials including PAHs, research and industry has not produced a self-assembled nanowire produced from asphaltene materials that exhibits a metallic character and electronic structure. The following methods and materials can be used to produce new class of materials consisting of a self-assembled quantum wire out of asphaltene.

Certain embodiments are directed to alkali promoted transition metal sulfide Fischer Tropsch catalyst synthesized using steps comprising (i) mixing an ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATM) precursor compound with an alkali metal compound and molybdenum disulfide in deionized water to form a reaction mixture, (ii) heating the reaction mixture at a temperature of at least 200, 250, 300, 350, 400C at a pressure of at lease 900, 1000, 1100, 1500, 2000 psi for more than 0.5 1, 1.5, 2.0, 3 or more hours to form a reaction product, (iii) filtering, washing, and drying the reaction product.

The present invention provides an attractive alternative to discharging the untreated effluent into municipal treatment plants or the environment through the production of a secondary commercial product from waste stream through a by-product synergy process.

The hydrotreating of petroleum feedstock is improved by using a layered transition metal catalyst, a mixture of such catalysts or a stocked bed of transition metal catalysts that has a selected ratio of edge to rim sites sufficient to provide a product having a predetermined sulfur and nitrogen content.In another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for selecting a transition metal catalyst system for use in hydrotreating nitrogen and sulfur containing feedstocks to provide a hydrotreated product having a predetermined nitrogen and sulfur content and at a predetermined reaction residence time, which method comprises: selecting the amount of sulfur and nitrogen to be removed from a given feedstock by hydrotreating to obtain a product having a predetermined nitrogen and sulfur content; determining the variation in the reaction kinetics for sulfur and nitrogen removal of the given feedstock by hydrotreating with a transition metal catalyst of varying edge to rim ratios; selecting, for a predetermined reaction residence time, that ratio from the varying edge to rim ratios of the transition metal catalyst that provides the requisite sulfur and nitrogen removal to provide the product of predetermined sulfur and nitrogen content.

This invention relates to the preparation and use of supported, manganese sulfide promoted molybdenum and tungsten sulfide catalysts useful for hydroprocessing processes, particularly hydrotreating. These catalysts are prepared by heating a composite of support material and precursor salt under oxygen-free conditions and in the presence of sulfur, wherein said precursor salt contains a thiometallate anion of Mo, W or mixture thereof and a cation comprising one or more promoter metals which are chelated by at least one neutral, nitrogen-containing polydentate ligand, and wherein said promoter metal comprises Mn alone or a mixture of Mn with Co, Ni, Zn, Cu or mixture thereof.
