Abstract: A display may be formed by an array of light-emitting diodes mounted to the surface of a display substrate. The light-emitting diodes may be inorganic light-emitting diodes formed from separate crystalline semiconductor structures. An array of pixel control circuits may be used to control light emission from the light-emitting diodes. Each pixel control circuit may be configured to control one or more respective passive matrices. To control partial pixel cells in the display, a donor pixel control circuit in a partial pixel cell may control the pixels in a receptor partial pixel cell without a pixel control circuit. To mitigate the size of an inactive area of the display, fanout signal lines for the display may be formed in the light-emitting active area of the display. The fanout signal lines may be formed between a row of pixel control circuits and a bottom edge of the light-emitting active area.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display with pixels configured to display an image. The pixels may be overlapped by a cover layer. An image transport layer may be formed from a coherent fiber bundle or Anderson localization material. The image transport layer may overlap the pixels and may have an input surface that receives the image from the pixels and a corresponding output surface on which the received image is viewable through the cover layer. Circuitry may be embedded within the image transport layer. The circuitry that is embedded within the image transport layer may include capacitive touch sensor circuitry, antenna resonating element structures, input-output components, signal lines, and other circuitry.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display panel for displaying images. A display cover layer having curved portions may overlap the display panel. An image transport layer having an input surface that receives light from the display panel may convey the light from the input surface to an output surface adjacent to an inner surface of the display cover layer. The image transport layer may include fibers with different lengths to form a region of the output surface with a curved profile. Each fiber in the coherent fiber bundle may have a respective output face. The output face of each fiber in the curved edge region of the image transport layer may be parallel to the display panel or may be angled towards the center of the image transport layer. Image distortion control circuitry may modify image data to control the perceived distortion of the display.

Abstract: A light guiding layer may be incorporated into an electronic device with multiple displays to create a seamless display surface between the adjacent displays. The light guiding layer may have a first portion that overlaps the active area of a first display panel, a second portion that overlaps the active area of a second, adjacent display panel, and a third portion that overlaps the inactive areas of the first and second display panels. The light guiding layer may redirect light from the active area of each display panel to the region above the inactive areas of the display panels where it is emitted towards the viewer. The light guiding layer therefore effectively hides the border between the two display panels by emitting light in that region. The light guiding layer may include light leakage promotion structures to ensure light is emitted in the border region.

Abstract: A display may be provided with display layers and a backlight unit. The display layers may include a thin-film transistor layer having a ledge. The display layers may include an upper polarizer layer and a lower polarizer layer. A color filter layer, liquid crystal layer, and the thin-film transistor layer may be interposed between the upper and lower polarizer layers. A display cover layer may overlap the display layers to serve as a protective layer. Gap filler may be placed between the thin-film transistor ledge and the display cover layer to help prevent the ledge from bending upwards. Support structures may be placed between the thin-film transistor structures and the backlight unit to help prevent the ledge from bending downwards. The support structures may include an extended edge portion of the lower polarizer, a stiffener layer, gap filler, adhesive layers, and other supporting structures.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for determining the temperature of a light-generating component of a display assembly using a voltage of the light-generating component are provided. In one embodiment, a method for operating an electronic device, which may include an external surface and a light-emitting diode operative to emit light for illuminating the external surface, may include detecting the forward voltage of the light-emitting diode, calculating the temperature of the light-emitting diode using the detected forward voltage of the light-emitting diode, and altering the performance of the electronic device based on the calculated temperature of the light-emitting diode. Abstract: An electronic device may have a housing in which components are mounted that produce heat. The heat producing components may be light-emitting diodes mounted on a flexible printed circuit in a display backlight, may be integrated circuits, or may be other devices that generate heat during operation. A heat spreading layer such as a layer of graphite may be attached to the backlight unit or other structures in the electronic device using adhesive. The adhesive may be patterned to form an unbonded area between at least some of the backlight unit or other structures to which the heat spreading layer is being attached and the heat spreading layer. The heat spreading layer may be mounted adjacent to a housing structure such as a metal midplate member that is attached to housing walls in the housing.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display overlapped by a cover layer. Portions of the surface of the display and cover layer may have curved profiles. The display may include a flexible substrate and may have bent edge portions protruding from a central region. Gaps may be formed between regions of pixels on a common substrate or between separate display panels. Gap-overlapping structures may overlap the gaps to hide internal components from view or to blend the appearance of gaps with the appearance of adjoining portions of a display layer. The gap-overlapping structures may include light sources such as crystalline semiconductor light-emitting diodes. The diodes may emit light through light diffusing structures. Protruding display layer fingers and other structures may be used to accommodate display cover layer surfaces with curved profiles such as corner surfaces of compound curvature.
