A rinsing liquid supply line supplies water through a protecting device and a heat exchanger to a junction which has a line leading to a rinsing liquid reservoir which includes a heating element to provide heat cleaning if desired, a line connected to a metering device to introduce an additive such as an alkali or acid, a branch line for rinsing components of the automatic milking machine such as teat cups and a branch line leading through non-return devices to a rinsing liquid buffer reservoir which can be pressurized by air pressure and used for cleansing components such as the teat cups and sensor on a robot arm and the device for cleaning the udders and teats of the animals being milked. Computer-controlled valving is provided for each of the branch lines for cleaning milking components of the automatic milking system, the rinsing liquid supply before the juncture and in the line to the rinsing liquid reservoir, as well as the rinsing liquid discharge line leading to the rinsing liquid buffer reservoir.

An apparatus for milking animals comprising a milking compartment including a milking robot for automatically connecting and disconnecting teat cups from the animal's teats and for automatically milking the animal. Embodiments of cleaning members for automatically cleaning the teats of the animal before the teat cups are connected thereto are disclosed. The cleaning members include mechanisms applied to the teats of the animal for removing the foremilk therefrom before the milking operation, as such, commences. In lieu of the cleaning members which not only automatically clean the teats of the animal but also remove the foremilk, another group of teat cups are optimally provided for this purpose. The cleaning members comprise two-rotating elements of various cross-sections. Their phases of the rotation or the distance between their axes of rotation or the shape of the elements or a combination thereof can be selectively modified to remove foremilk or to clean the teats.

The milk measuring device includes four milk meters, one for each teat cup, having separate discharge lines coupled to common discharge lines which connect with a circulation line or loop that includes a bulk milk cooling tank, a two-speed or variable speed pump, and a plurality of heat exchangers for precooling the milk received from the common discharge lines before it is received in the bulk milk cooling tank and to recirculate and cool the milk received in the bulk milk cooling tank. After the milk has been discharged from the bulk milk cooling tank and the system is to be disinfected, washed and rinsed, the heat exchangers being used in a heat pump arrangement, can heat the fluid therein as selected and desired for sanitizing the system.

The station has a waste disposal at the rear and a feeder forward. An electronic system causes an animal to enter the station prior to waste elimination. A sensor determines the presence of animal waste. An electronic system that remotely guides the animal, comprises a radio transmitter at the station, a radio receiver mounted on the animal to guide the animal by shock or sounds to the station and/or sounds produced at the station attract the animal. A sensor on the animal's tail that signals the onset of elimination or presence of waste, may be coupled to the station's electronic system, or to a speaker near the animal's ear for producing unpleasant sounds to discourage elimination outside the station. Electronic systems are used to reward the animal after its elimination in the station. The station comprises devices to clean the animal's udders and substantially simultaneously to flush the animal's droppings from a grating into a waste disposal area, and to milk the animals subsequent to cleaning. After the animal's elimination and other processes are complete, the station is opened at its forward end and the animal is induced to leave.
