An ester product consisting essentially of the acylation product of a mixture of near linear aliphatic 1-alkanols, said alkanols containing six to twenty carbon atoms and having a methyl to methylene branch ratio less than 0.25. These novel esters can be further converted to valuable 1-alkenes by pyrrolysis. In the preferred embodiments, esters are derived by acylation of C.sub.9 -C12 1-alkanols having a methyl to methylene branch ratio less than 0.18.In the preferred method of synthesizing the esters, acylation is carried out using aliphatic carboxylic acid, anhydride, halide or ester as acylating agent, wherein the agent has 2 to 20 carbon atoms. For instance, the acylating agent may comprise acetic anhydride and to produce acetate esters.

Certain water-soluble polymers retain their viscosities in high brine environments and are highly useful as surfactant-mobility control agents in oil recovery processes. These polymers have stiff backbone chains which are poly-2,6-dimethyl-p-phenylene oxide, polysulfone or poly(p-phenylene ether-sulfone) and side chains which may be formed by halomethylating phenyl rings of these backbone chains followed by quaternizing the halomethyl groups. For more thickening power, the molecular weight of the polymer can be increased by controlled cross-linking with a calculated amount of difunctional amine.

A method for the recovery of oil from an oil-containing subterranean formation by waterflooding employing as an injection medium an aqueous solution of an anionic polymeric surfactant formed by reacting a polymer including succinic anhydride moieties with a primary amine to provide a polymeric reaction product in which at least 20 mol percent of the anhydride moieties have been converted, by reaction with said amine, to succinimide or succinamide groups. The polymeric anionic surfactants of the invention exhibit good physical and chemical stability, are shear stable, are effective in maintaining the salt stability of other surfactants (such as petroleum sulfonates) and also function as viscosifiers, even in the presence of significant concentrations of divalent metal ions. According to a preferred form of the invention, the surfactants comprise the reaction product of a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride and triethylammonium aniline disulfonate, in which reaction product from 20 mol percent to 40 mol percent of the anhydride moieties have been converted to succinimide or succinamide groups.

The invention provides a composition of matter selected from the group consisting of ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl substituent groups having from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, n is from 2 to about 20, m is from 2 to about 20, and Di is a substituted or unsubstituted diamondoid compound. The invention further provides diamondoid-containing ammonium salts, and a pharmaceutical treatment method using the compositions of the invention.
