Abstract:
A method and data processing system for providing a preload imaging process that is self-healing. The state information of a single or multi-threaded preload environment is autonomically recognized and stored in a log file along with the corresponding file images that are being preloaded. The log tracks the image files and related state information for a plurality of simultaneously executing (preloading) threads. When a crash occurs during the preload process, the log information is dynamically analyzed to determine a safe point within the respective threads to resume the preload operation. The preload process is then autonomically resumed from the safe location without necessarily having to restart the entire process.
Abstract:
Traffic signal data is broadcast, for receipt by vehicles traversing the roadways controlled by the traffic signals. If desired, traffic lights are provided with the capability to broadcast their location, status, changing cycles and timing data continuously. A receiving system in a vehicle is configured to receive the traffic signal data and display, to a user of the vehicle, visual display information and/or audible information informing the user of a speed range which, if followed, optimizes the use of the highway and minimizes the number of starts and stops that must be made.
Abstract:
A method and system for obtaining a check digit to identify a given numeric sequence of n digits and to verify the accuracy of subsequent entries of the numeric sequence. First, a numeric sequence of n digits is distributed among elements of at least two matrices. Next, the matrices are multiplied together, thereby obtaining a resultant matrix having m elements. Finally, a check digit is derived from the m elements of the resultant matrix, which may be utilized to identify the numeric sequence and verify the accuracy of subsequent entries of the numeric sequence.
Abstract:
A “setmax” command is issued in BIOS to hide the service area (HPA) of a HDD during normal operation, so that the HPA cannot be accessed or erased inadvertently by the user or by a virus. Pressing a special key (e.g., F11) during booting permits access to the HPA.
Abstract:
An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for selecting a waking process. An input module receives a specified input during the off state of a data processing device. In addition, the input module stores the input in the storage module. The storage module may be integrated within the input module. The input module activates the data processing device in response to the input. A wake module retrieves the input from the storage module. In addition, the wake module determines a process that corresponds to the input. The wake module wakes the data processing device using the process.
Abstract:
A method for updating an ISO file, e.g., to add a digital signature to the ISO file, includes adding a supplemental file composed of, e.g., all zeroes to the ISO file before recording, and then recording the ISO file with supplemental file to an optical disk using ISO format. A digital signature is computed after recording. The zeroes in the supplemental file are replaced by the values of the digital signature and the file is re-saved. Also, an ISO file that might have a common part and several unique parts, e.g., for respective languages, is deconstructed such that only a single copy of the common part is recorded to disk, avoiding multiple recordations of the same data.
Abstract:
A local area network (LAN) server allows an authenticated user of a computer remote from the LAN to cause a diskless computer in the LAN to redirect screen shots to the computer remote from the LAN, with the screen shots being generated based on a users computer image persistently stored in an enterprise storage of the LAN.
Abstract:
A system, method, and program product is provided that updates the firmware on a hybrid drive by reserving a memory area within the hybrid disk drive's nonvolatile memory buffer. The firmware update is then stored in the reserved memory area. The next time the platters of the hybrid disk drive spin up, the firmware update that is stored in the reserved memory area is identified. The identified update is then written to a firmware memory of a firmware that controls the operation of the hybrid drive. In one embodiment, the update is written to the firmware memory by flashing the firmware's memory. After the firmware is updated, the hybrid drive is reset. Resetting of the hybrid drive includes executing the updated firmware.
Abstract:
A method for booting into computer memory a non-operating system (O.S.) program from a hard disk drive (HDD) prior to booting into memory an O.S. from the HDD. The method includes establishing a table of contents (TOC) on the HDD that contains entries for special O.S. programs. A pointer to the TOC is placed in non-volatile memory of the computer that is associated with the HDD, and when BIOS of the computer is prompted to load into memory one of the special O.S. programs, the pointer is accessed and used to locate the TOC, which in turn is accessed to load the special O.S. program.
Abstract:
Hacking a rental computer to use it beyond purchased rental time is prevented by plugging a time card with internal counter into a DIMM socket of the motherboard and encrypting the register locations of the time card with the private key of the motherboard to bind the time card to the motherboard. Thus, if the time card is not detected at boot or if it is removed during operation the computer is disabled. The counter counts down the rented time period as it receives clocking signals, and at the elapse of the purchased period disables the computer.
