Various embodiments of a “smart” drug delivery system are provided which includes an add-on module and a reusable or disposable drug pen in conjunction with a data management unit(s) DMU. Upon attachment to the pen, the add-on module may: determine dosage selected, injection of selected dosage, duration of injection, time of injection, whether the pen has been primed or shaken to thoroughly mix up insulin mixtures, transmit information relating to insulin dosage and injection to a data management unit, provide reminders, error warning or messages on improper usage or reuse of needles, track amount of drug remaining on board the pen or duration of usage of pen with respect to expiry of the drug on board, or provide an audible alarm for locating misplaced pen and module. Methods of using the drug delivery system are also described.

In certain embodiments, a welding wire and container assembly includes a container having an interior volume; a coil of welding wire disposed in the interior volume; and a wire container cover. The wire container cover may include a top surface having an opening therethrough to enable welding wire to pass through the wire container cover when the wire container cover is disposed on the container. The assembly also may include a skirt askew to the top surface, wherein the skirt is adapted to produce friction between the skirt and a side of the container when the wire container cover is disposed on the container housing and wherein the skirt is non-locking with respect to the container.

Apparatus and methodology for inserting an intraocular lens (IOL) into an eye. The apparatus includes a cartridge for holding an IOL and a handpiece with a body member for receiving the cartridge, an injector rod that is receivable by the body member, and a drive mechanism that longitudinally oscillates the injector rod in the body member when a rotational force is applied about a longitudinal axis in a single direction. In other words, a constant rotation in a single direction of the drive mechanism causes the injector rod to move distally and proximally in discrete increments, with the distal increments being larger than the proximal increments. Accordingly, the injector rod urges an IOL out of the handpiece in a two-steps-forward, one-step-back manner, thereby minimizing or eliminating the chance of the injector rod engaging with the IOL.

A foldable intraocular lens for providing vision contains an optic body that includes an optical zone and a peripheral zone entirely surrounding the optical zone. The optic body has an anterior face, a substantially opposing posterior face, an optic edge, and an optical axis. The anterior face comprises a central face, a peripheral face, and a recessed annular face therebetween that is disposed posterior to the peripheral face. The intraocular lens further comprises at least one haptic that is integrally formed with the peripheral zone. The haptic comprises a distal posterior face, a proximal posterior face, and a step edge disposed at a boundary therebetween. The haptic further comprises a side edge disposed between the optic edge and the step edge. The proximal posterior face and the posterior face of the optic body form a continuous surface. An edge corner is formed by the intersection of the continuous surface with the optic edge, the side edge, and the step edge.

A mobile commerce system which has been configured in accordance with the present invention can include a multiplicity of mobile server wallets. Each wallet can have an association with a corresponding subscriber in a wireless service provider network. A proxy server can be disposed in the wireless service provider network. Finally, a filter plug-in can be coupled to the proxy server and configured to intercept selected payment messages flowing through the proxy server. The filter plug-in further can be configured to route the payment messages to selected ones of the mobile server wallets.

Sedimentation field flow fractionation apparatus having a rotor-mounted fractionation column, has detectors positioned to observe the fluids from the column while still in the rotor. Designs include parallel reference and fractionation columns having their outflows compared in a rotor-mounted fluid flow density balance. Optionally weired channel columns provide a free fluid surface for more efficient resolution. Horizontal rotational axes are preferred. Rotor-mounted fluid flow density balances are also provided which are suitable for detecting liquid density changes in the other applications, such as liquid chromatography.

A method for packing a chromatography column having an inlet port at one end and an outlet port at the other, comprises feeding a slurry or smoke of particulate bed material in a carrier fluid and applying a predetermined pressure to the bed material while allowing the carrier fluid to escape, wherein both the inlet and outlet ports are protected by porous bed-retaining means positioned apart to provide a space for the bed between them, at least a final portion of the slurry or smoke being fed through a filler tube into the space for the bed until the space is full and the bed extends back into the filler tube, predetermined pressure to the bed being applied via the slurry or smoke in the filler tube, and the filler tube then sealed being against relaxation of the bed pressure.
