An apparatus and method for allocating a bandwidth for up-stream data transmission to a plurality of Optical Network Units (ONUs) in an Ethernet Passive Optical Access Network (EPON) in which the ONUs are connected to a single Optical Line Terminal (OLT) are disclosed. The bandwidth allocation method for guaranteeing a Quality of Service (QoS) in the EPON includes the steps of: a) classifying up-stream data to be transmitted from a plurality of Optical Network Units (ONUs) of the EPON to an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) into a plurality of classes according to predetermined data priority information, and requesting bandwidths required for individual classes from the OLT; b) allowing the OLT to perform a bandwidth distribution process according to bandwidth requirement quantities of individual classes using weights pre-assigned to individual classes; and c) allowing the OLT to distribute a residual bandwidth acquired after the bandwidth distribution process is performed from among an available total up-stream bandwidth to the ONUs.

The bandwidth allocation device includes a plurality of optical network units and an optical line terminal (OLT). The optical network units classify uplink data to be transmitted to an optical line terminal according to a predetermined priority, and transmit the classified uplink data by receiving an allocated bandwidth according to each class from the optical line terminal. A method for controlling a security channel for reducing system load by extending the use period of a security association key is provided. In this method, an upper bit initial value of an initialization vector of an encryption algorithm and a using range thereof are shared between a transmitting side and a receiving side when a security channel is created. Then, a secure association is created between a transmitting side and a receiving side by setting an association number, a next packet number which is a lower bit value of an initialization vector, and a secure association key. Afterward, a packet number is modified whenever a frame is transmitted until all of packet numbers are used. When all packet numbers are used, the upper bit value of the initialization vector changes.

An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) protection triggering method using “received-AIS” flag determines whether the failure generation position is generated within a protected domain or not, by determining whether the “received-AIS” flag is “0” in case that a node detecting a failure link transmits an end-to-end AIS cell to a downstream side node, and a source point passing the end-to-end AIS cell sets the “received-AIS” flag to “1” and then receives “AIS cell receiving” signal from a sink point of the protected domain, thereby obviating a CRC-10 calculation problem and a backward compatibility.
