An aromatic condensation polyimide film that is approximately 90% transparent at 500 nm, useful for thermal protective coatings and the like, and the processes for preparing same by thermal and chemical conversion are disclosed. An essential feature of the invention for achieving maximum optical transparency films requires utilizing recrystallized and/or sublimated specific aromatic diamines and dianhydride monomers and introducing phenoxy or thiophenyl separator groups and isomeric m,m'- or o,p'-oriented diamines into the polymer molecular structure. The incorporation of these groups in the polymer structure serves to separate the chromaphoric centers and reduce the formation of inter-chain and intra-chain charge transfer complexes which normally cause absorptions in the UV-visible range. The films may be obtained by hand, brushing, casting or spraying a layer of the polyamic acid solutions onto a surface and thermally converting the applied layer to the polyimide or the polyamic acid solution can be chemically converted to the polyimide, subsequentially dissolved in an organic solvent, and applied as a polyimide film layer with the solvent therein thermally removed.

An improvement of addition polyimides wherein an essentially solventless, high viscosity laminating resin is synthesized from low-cost liquid monomers. The improved process takes advantage of a reactive, liquid plasticizer such as monoethylphthalate (MEP) which is used in lieu of an alcohol solvent, and helps solve a major problem of maintaining good prepreg tack and drape, or the ability of the prepreg to adhere to adjacent plies and conform to a desired shape during the layup process. This improvement results in both longer life of the polymer prepreg and the processing of low-void laminates and appears to be applicable to all addition polyimide systems.

At least one polymeric web is activated upon application thereto of an electric field and exhibits electrostriction by rotation of polar graft moieties within the polymeric web. In one embodiment, one of the two polymeric webs in an active web upon application thereto of the electric field, and the other polymeric web is a non-active web upon application thereto of the electric field. In another embodiment, both of the two polymeric webs are capable of being active webs upon application thereto of the electric field. However, these two polymeric webs are alternately activated and non-activated by the electric field.

Polymer encapsulated metal oxide particles are prepared by combining a polyamide acid in a polar aprotic solvent with a metal alkoxide solution. The polymer was imidized and the metal oxide formed simultaneously in a refluxing organic solvent. The resulting polymer-metal oxide is an intimately mixed commingled blend, possessing synergistic properties of both the polymer and preceramic metal oxide. The encapsulated metal oxide particles have multiple uses including, being useful in the production of skin lubricating creams, weather resistant paints, as a filler for paper, making ultraviolet light stable filled printing ink, being extruded into fibers or ribbons, and coatings for fibers used in the production of composite structural panels.

A waterproof and breathable, fire-resistant laminate is provided for use in tents, garments, shoes, and covers, especially in industrial, military and emergency situations. The laminate permits water vapor evaporation while simultaneously preventing liquid water penetration. Further, the laminate is fire-resistant and significantly reduces the danger of toxic compound production when exposed to flame or other high heat source. The laminate may be applied to a variety of substrates and is comprised of a silicone rubber and plurality of fire-resistant, inherently thermally-stable polyimide particles.

A structure which is effective as an electrical insulator or as a transmitter-receiver of electromagnetic energy is prepared by providing a suitable substrate and covering the substrate with an adhering layer of a low dielectric, high temperature, linear aromatic polyimide. This polyimide is prepared by:(1) selecting aromatic diamine and aromatic dianhydride reactants to meet at least two of the following three conditions:(a) a reactant must have minimal permanent or inducible electrical dipolar characteristics as a result of the presence of pendant or bridging groups therein;(b) a reactant must impart a high degree of free volume to the polymer caused by inefficient chain packing therein in the solid state as a result of the presence of pendant or bridging groups therein; and(c) a reactant must have fluorine atoms chemically attached thereto; and(2) chemically combining equimolar quantities of the aromatic diamine and aromatic dianhydride reactants in a solvent to form a high molecular weight polyamic acid solution, and converting the high molecular weight polyamic acid to the corresponding low dielectric, high temperature linear aromatic polyimide.

A novel series of polymers and copolymers based on a polyimide backbone with the incorporation of carbonate moieties along the backbone. The process for preparing these polymers and copolymers is also disclosed as is a novel series of dinitrodiphenyl carbonates and diaminodiphenyl carbonates. The novel polymers and copolymers exhibit high temperature capability and because of the carbonate unit, many exhibit a high degree of order and/or crystallinity.

Semi-2-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-2-IPNs) of improved qualities are prepared by combining a linear polymer and a cross-linkable oligomer which have identical recurring units. Linear and crosslinking components having identical structures in their backbones are mutually soluble and will thus form one homogenous phase unlike other network system. A novel semi-2-IPN of the present invention is prepared by combining a linear polyimidesulfone with a cross-linking acetylene-terminated polyimidesulfone. This combination results in a semi-2-IPN of improved strength, adhesion, and processability.
