Polymers comprising pendant rearranged oxazoline and/or oxazine portions linked to a perfluorocarbon moiety having a perfluoroalkyl group are prepared. Such polymers can provide coating compositions which exhibit critical surface tensions of wetting of less than about 15 dynes/cm.

Novel polymers having high activity as cationic surface-active agents are prepared by the addition polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated aromatic sulfonium salts, e.g., ##STR1## When such polymers are heated and/or dried, they are irreversibly converted to inert, nonionic residues without the elimination of odorous by-products. The novel sulfonium salt polymers having relatively low molecular weight and low charge density are particularly useful as surfactants or emulsifiers in the emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers such as styrene, butadiene, alkyl acrylates and the like. The polymers having high molecular weight and high charge density are useful as thickeners and flocculants.

The sol is prepared by forming a solution of a polymer that contains pendant cationic groups and pendant acid groups in an aqueous-based solvent that contains water and a suitable organic solvent and removing a sufficient amount of the organic solvent from the solution to form a composition characterized by being reversibly dissolvable and reconstitutable by addition and removal of a suitable organic solvent. The composition of the present invention provides quick-set films that can be prepared in the absence additional surface active agents and with a substantial absence of organic solvents.

A composition comprising an aqueous-based solvent and a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer that is characterized by having a backbone with at least one pendant weak acid group and at least one pendant strong cationic group associated with a bicarbonate counterion is described. A water-resistant, fast dry-to-the-touch coating that does not release noxious gases can be prepared by applying the composition to a substrate. The coating can be designed to be either permanent, or removable by the addition of mild acids such as aqueous solutions of vinegar or citric acid.

The substrate is patterned with a resin which is a cure of a coating composition comprising a solution of: a) a crosslinkable polymeric surfactant having i) at least one pendant fluorocarbon moiety, and ii) a plurality of pendant ionic moieties which are capable of reacting with counterions to form a crosslinked polymer; and b) a polymeric crosslinking agent having a plurality of ionic or potentially ionic moiety counterions capable of reacting with the ionic moieties of the surfactant, wherein the pattern defines a plurality of wells adapted to receive a coloring agent.

A process is disclosed for the formation of a high flux composite membrane having a thin discriminating film affixed to a porous support layer through a glue layer. The process comprises the formation of the discriminating film by irradiating an aqueous polymer solution in the substantial absence of drying and under conditions which are sufficient to form a polymer film on the surface of the polymer solution at the interphase of the solution and a blanketing fluid. The film is then affixed to the support through the glue layer which may be the same polymer solution from which the discriminating film is formed.
