    摘要: There is provided a polarizer constituted by: a polarizing element; and at least one transparent protective film constituted by two layers of retardation films with an in-plane retardation in a range of from 190 to 320 nm with respect to light having a wavelength of 550 nm, the transparent protective film being bonded onto one of opposite surfaces of the polarizing element so that a fast axis of each of the retardation films is parallel with an absorption axis of the polarizing element, the two layers of retardation films being constituted by a combination of a retardation film with Nz of from 0.15 to 0.35 and a retardation film with Nz of from 0.65 to 0.85 on the condition of nx>ny and Nz=(nx−nz)/(nx−ny) in which nx and ny are in-plane refractive indices of each of the retardation films respectively, and nz is a refractive index in a direction of thickness of each of the retardation films.

    摘要: A light pipe has an upper surface, a lower surface, an incidence side surface, and light output means constituted by a repetitive prismatic structure and formed in said upper surface so that light incident on said incidence side surface exits from said lower surface through said light output means but light incident on said lower surface is transmitted through said upper surface. The light pipe has a refractive index in a range of from 1.51 to 1.55, and information light generated on said lower surface of said light pipe is transmitted to said upper surface of said light pipe so as to be made visible at said upper surface. In a surface light source unit, a light source is disposed on the incidence side surface of the above-mentioned light pipe. In a reflection type liquid-crystal display device, a liquid-crystal cell including a reflection layer is disposed on a lower surface of the above-mentioned light pipe or on a lower surface of a light pipe contained in the above-mentioned surface light source unit.

The viewing angle controlling system includes: a first polarizer and a second polarizer which are each in the form of a film comprising an absorption dichroic material. The first polarizer has an absorption axis in its film plane, and the second polarizer has an absorption axis in the range of angle from 0 to 45° to the normal line of its film plane.

A cutting position in the width direction A2, in which a polarizing sheet material MP is to be cut along its longitudinal direction A1, is determined based on the numbers of defects counted with respect to plural points in the width direction A2 of the polarizing sheet material MP. This makes it possible to determine the cutting position in such a way that a region with many defects does not fall within the cut width, so that a higher-yield cutting position can be determined. The cutting position can also be determined using a simple process in which defects are counted with respect to plural points in the width direction A2.

    摘要: Provided is a liquid crystal display in which occurrence of iridescent unevenness is suppressed, even when a film with high level of mechanical properties, chemical resistance and water-barrier properties is used as a polarizer-protective-film. Also, disclosed is a polarizing plate to be used in the liquid crystal display. The liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal cell, a light source, a first polarizing plate placed between the liquid crystal cell and the light source, and a second polarizing plate placed on a viewer side of the liquid crystal cell. The first polarizing plate includes a polarizer and a first protective film placed on a light source side principal surface of the first protective film, and the first protective film satisfies following relations: (i) 0 nm≦Re1≦3000 nm; (ii) Nz1≧5; and (iii) Rth1>2500 nm.

    摘要: A method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element, includes: providing a long sheet material including a laminate of an optical film containing a polarizer, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, and a carrier film temporarily bonded to the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer; cutting the long sheet material at predetermined intervals, while maintaining the continuity of the carrier film; peeling off the carrier film by a tensile force; and continuously bonding the resulting optical film pieces to liquid crystal panels, respectively, through the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer exposed by the peeling off, while feeding the resulting optical film pieces, wherein the cutting is performed to such a depth as to substantially reach the carrier film, and the carrier film is cut to a depth less than half of the thickness of the carrier film at least both end portions in the width direction of the carrier film.

    摘要: A method of manufacturing a polarizer is provided that makes it possible to virtually simultaneously perform a contact of a hydrophilic polymer film with liquid and stretch of the hydrophilic polymer film in a width direction by a tenter method, or the like, using a small and simple manufacturing equipment. A method of manufacturing a polarizer includes a width direction stretching process for stretching a hydrophilic polymer film 1 in the width direction, which is continuously supplied, by gripping both ends in a width direction thereof with grip means 2 and moving the grip means 2 in a longitudinal direction of the film 1 as well as by bringing the film 1 into contact with liquid and also moving the grip means 2, which grips at least one of both ends in the width direction of the film 1, outwardly in the width direction of the film 1; and a dyeing process for dyeing the film 1 by a dichroic material. In the width direction stretching process, a contact with the liquid is carried out by at least one of spraying and coating of the liquid, and the width direction stretching process is carried out in at least one of the dyeing process and a process other than the dyeing process.
