For a period of time, light from the laser is made to impinge on the medium from slightly different directions. The reflected light is analyzed using frequency doubling principles to determine when the light beam is most nearly perpendicular to the medium.

The method comprises the steps of transmitting a set of optical signals through a network, each of the optical signals having a respective wavelength; and tracking changes to said set of signals by passing each of the signals through a filter having a bandpass function, and dithering the filter bandpass about the wavelengths of each of said set of signals to generate filter output signals. The filter output signals are used to adjust the network or the set of optical signals to compensate for said changes.

The optical switch includes a first set of ports for receiving in parallel an optical byte of data, and multiple second sets of ports each capable of outputting in parallel the optical byte of data. An array of optical switching elements is disposed between the first set of ports and the multiple second sets of ports. The array of optical switching elements direct the optical byte of data in parallel from the first set of ports to at least one second set of ports of the multiple second sets of ports. The switching elements may comprise micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) devices, each having a position controllable reflective surface. Thin film optical filters can be provided on the reflective surfaces for wavelength selective switching.

A method and system for dispersion control of electromagnetic signals in communication networks by narrowing the widths of electromagnetic pulses such as modulated laser signals. Generally, in the preferred embodiment, the present invention utilizes a feedback loop based on dither frequency modulation which dynamically adjusts the alignment of the laser center frequency with the filter passband. In this way, there is an acceptable tradeoff between optical power and pulse width, so a higher power laser can be used to generate a narrower optical pulse. The narrower pulses then travel farther in the fiber link before reaching their dispersion limit. It is believed that, by using this invention, existing link distance could be doubled, while re-using existing installed singlemode fiber. The systems employing the feedback loop may be information carrying or control systems.

A silicon oxynitride (SiON)/silicon dioxide (SiO2) optical waveguide switch with a wavelength locked feedback control loop which monitors the wavelength of UV radiation produced by a UV tunable laser diffraction grating write source which has passed through a UV bandpass filter and is then used to selectively write a diffraction grating in the optical waveguide switch. The diffraction grating structure can be switched on or off at will, resulting in an optical switch element for IR radiation traveling through the optical waveguide. This optical switch element is a basic building block which can be used for many other systems, such as optical logic gates or all-optical cross connect switches for wide area networks. Further, it may be used to selectively tap off a portion of the optical signal, for example to read header information in a data stream (or packets) which indicates the destination switch port of the optical data, without disrupting the remaining optical data.
