The particles include an electrochemically active phase and an electrochemically inactive phase that share a common phase boundary. The electrochemically active phase includes elemental silicon and the electrochemically inactive phase includes at least two metal elements in the form of an intermetallic compound, a solid solution, or combination thereof. Each of the phases is free of crystallites that are greater than 1000 angstroms prior to cycling. In addition, the electrochemically active phase is amorphous after the electrode has been cycled through one full charge-discharge cycle in a lithium-ion battery.

Novel peptide nucleic acids and novel linked peptide nucleic acids, form triple stranded structures with nucleic acids. The peptide nucleic acids include ligands such as naturally occurring nucleobases attached to a peptide backbone through a suitable linker. Other nucleobases including C-pyrimidines and iso-pyrimidines can be used as the ligands in Hoogsteen strands to increase binding affinity. Two peptide nucleic acid strands are joined together with a linker to form a bis-peptide nucleic acid. The individual strands of the peptide nucleic acids in the bis compounds can be orientated either parallel or antiparallel to each other.

Polycyclic diamines, incorporating a basic framework similar to [3.3.3]propellane, and derivatives of the basic polycyclic diamines and a process for preparing same are provided. The diamines are prepared by subjecting bispyridine compounds to electroreductive coupling in an acidic solution. The polycyclic diamines and derivatives thereof are useful as chain extenders, crosslinking agents and curatives in various polymer systems.

The negative active material for rechargeable lithium batteries includes at least one generally spherical assembly having flake-shaped materials that are capable of doping and dedoping lithium, and are arranged in a generally spherical shape defining a central pore. The negative active material imparts improved cycle-life characteristics.
