Processes to produce the short-cut, water non-dispersible polymer microfiber are also provided as well as process for producing nonwoven articles.

A high strength specialty paper comprising at least one nonwoven web layer is provided. The nonwoven web layer comprises a plurality of first fibers, a plurality of cellulosic fibers, and a binder. The first fibers comprise a water non-dispersible synthetic polymer and have a different configuration and/or composition than the cellulosic fibers. The first fibers have a length of less than 25 millimeters and a minimum transverse dimension of less than 5 microns. Also disclosed is a process for producing the first fibers and the multicomponent fibers from which they are derived.

Methods of blocking stains on a substrate to be painted are disclosed, as are stain-blocking composites that are useful according to the disclosed methods. In a broad aspect, the methods include the steps of contacting a stained portion of the substrate with a dry film layer; applying pressure to the dry film layer to cause the dry film layer to adhere to the stained portion of the substrate and to at least a portion of the substrate adjacent the stained portion of the substrate; and subsequently coating the dry film layer and the adjacent substrate with one or more additional liquid coating layers. Stain blocking composites useful according to the methods described include a release layer, to which the pressure is applied; a dry film layer, that can be clear or pigmented, that serves to block the stain; and an optional adhesive layer, intended to assist in adhering the dry film layer to the stained portion of the substrate and to at least that portion of the substrate adjacent the stained portion of the substrate.

The acetoacetate-functionalized alkyd resin is the reaction product of (i) an alkyd resin, and (ii) an alkyl acetoacetate. Also disclosed is a method of preparing a waterborne acetoacetate-functionalized alkyd coating composition which includes the step of contacting an acetoacetate-functionalized alkyd resin with at least one drier in the presence of water.

An aqueous-dispersion comprising a polyester (A) having repeat units from at least one dicarboxylic acid, at least one difunctional sulfomonomer containing at least one metal sulfonate group attached to an aromatic nucleus wherein said functional groups are carboxyl or hydroxyl, and at least one difunctional glycol; and a polymer (B) having repeat units from styrene or one or more derivatives of styrene; a hydroxyalkyl(meth)-acrylate; and a carboxyl group containing monomer selected from methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, itaconic acid and mixtures thereof. Polymer (B) is formed from monomers polymerized in the presence of an aqueous dispersion of polyester (A). The aqueous dispersion may be used in various coatings and inks having excellent water resistance, alkaline resistance, and redispersibility.
